New Government 2 Way-Radio Leaves Some Citizens Powerless
NEWS: NEW GOVERNMENT RADIO SYSTEM IS RENDERING CONSUMERS' GARAGE DOOR OPENERS USELESS; CITIZENS URGED TO TAKE ACTION
Living in the twenty-first century, we take the little things for granted - cell phones, mp3 players, laptop computers. But what happens when one of America's most widely used wireless devices -- a remote controlled garage door opener -- is taken away, especially when it's the result of the government's actions? Many consumers want to know!
According to the Federal Communications Commission, there are fifty-six million remote-controlled garage door openers installed in the United States. And for the fifty million that operate at 390 megahertz, a new radio system being installed by the Department of Defense will make most of these garage door openers obsolete. The DOD is unilaterally installing a two-way radio system at military bases nationwide that will overpower not only tens of millions of residential units, but also millions of access systems used by businesses, fire stations, hospitals and warehouses.
Currently this problem is only affecting certain areas of Florida and Pennsylvania, but, because the Department of Defense says the new radio system will be deployed nationwide, the problem is expected to spread. That means more than fifty million consumers might be affected - with a price tag of four to eight billion dollars. Residents are urged to call their elected representatives in congress or visit safeandsecureaccess.org.
