Lexus Gauntlet Trophy on Display at USC v. UCLA Football Game
Media Alert WHAT: The crown jewel of the USC-UCLA rivalry, the Lexus Gauntlet trophy, will be on display at the Rose Bowl on Saturday, Dec. 4 as the Trojans and Bruins battle in football for citywide bragging rights and points towards winning the fourth annual competition. Stunning to look at, the Lexus Gauntlet trophy was fabricated using the most ancient of all manufacturing processes from the Bronze Age, coupled with the most advanced mold-making technology available in today's world. The 150-pound, pewter-gilded award will return to its trophy case on the USC campus following Saturday's clash of cross- town rivals. WHO: Presented by the Southern California Lexus Dealers Association, the trophy is awarded annually to the University with the most successful athletic year against its archrival. UCLA and USC compete head-to-head in 18 sports for the Lexus Gauntlet trophy. WHERE: Rose Bowl 1001 Rose Bowl Drive Pasadena, CA 91103 (Sideline during game, on field at halftime) WHEN: 11 a.m. PST until the end of the game Dec. 4, 2004 Kickoff for the game is scheduled for 1:30 p.m. PST BACKGROUND: USC has won the Lexus Gauntlet trophy in two of three years since the all-sports challenge was established including last year, 57.5 to 52.5. UCLA captured the coveted prize in 2003. So far this season, the Bruins hold a slim 15-to-10 point advantage after six events. Points are earned for each of the 18 contests in the season-long competition. The Southern California Lexus Dealers are proud to be the leading sponsors of both the UCLA and USC athletic departments. In the fall of 2001, the schools signed a four-year contract making Lexus the exclusive title sponsor of every USC-UCLA athletic competition. Now, based on the practice of knights who challenged each other to duel by throwing their armored gauntlets to the ground, Lexus has issued the absolute challenge: the Lexus Gauntlet competition.
