Winestock to Succeed Darden in Directing UPS's U.S. Operations

ATLANTA--Nov. 2, 20042, 2004--UPS today announced changes in its top management, including the upcoming retirement of the executive responsible for all package operations in the United States.

Cal Darden, for the past seven years the senior vice president of U.S. operations and a member of the UPS Board of Directors since 2001, will retire in early 2005 after a 33-year career with UPS.

UPS Chairman and CEO Mike Eskew announced Darden would be succeeded by Jim Winestock, currently the manager of UPS's North Central Region. That region includes six states in America's heartland with 244 facilities and more than 51,000 employees. In succeeding Darden, Winestock will join the UPS Management Committee, which directs the day-to-day management of the company.

"Cal Darden leaves an amazing legacy of leadership and service excellence to our company," said Eskew. "He developed and implemented UPS's quality strategy; he oversaw the aggressive introduction of driver and operational technology, and he brought UPS's customer service levels to the highest in the industry.

"Jim Winestock has been well prepared by Cal for this promotion," Eskew continued. "Jim grew up in the package operation, but also has experience in finance and accounting, human resources and industrial engineering and has served as the manager of two Districts and two Regions. It is a testament to the strength and depth of our management team that we have such high-caliber managers who can step up."

Winestock, 53, joined UPS in 1969 as a part-time package loader in northern Florida while in college. After graduating from Massey College in Jacksonville, he was promoted into management and worked in a broad range of jobs of increasing responsibility across Florida and Georgia. In 1992, he was promoted to manager of the Northeast Texas District, then in 1996 assumed responsibility for the Missouri District. He was promoted again in 1998 to become the manager of the Midwest Region and assumed his current post in 2000.

Winestock also has worked as coordinator of UPS's Corporate Schools and is a graduate of the UPS Community Internship Program. A native of Greenville, S.C., Winestock sits on the Board of Directors of the Chicago Urban League and on the Executive Board of the College of DuPage. He also is a trustee of the MARCH Foundation, and completed the Advanced Management Program at the Wharton School of Business. Winestock and his wife, Elizabeth, have two daughters.

Darden joined UPS in 1971 as a part-time package loader while attending Canisius College in New York. After graduating with a degree in business management, he was promoted into management and moved through a series of operations jobs in New York, California and Tennessee. In 1984, he was promoted to the manager of the Metro Jersey District, then assumed responsibility for the North Jersey District in 1986 and the Metro D.C. District in 1991.

Darden became the manager of the Pacific Region in 1993, then in 1995 was named UPS's first Strategic Quality Coordinator with the job of developing and implementing UPS's quality strategy, which focuses on customer satisfaction and employee empowerment. Darden subsequently assumed responsibility for one-half of UPS's U.S. operations in 1998 and was promoted to his current post in 2001. That same year, he was elected to the UPS Board of Directors.

A native of Buffalo, N.Y., Darden serves on the Board of Directors of the National Urban League and is a member of the 100 Black Men of North Metro Atlanta. He chairs the Board of Trustees of the Atlanta Police Foundation and is significantly involved with the United Way. He also is a director of the Target Corp. and Coca-Cola Enterprises Inc. Darden was recently ranked eighth on FORTUNE's listing of the 50 Most Powerful Black Executives in America.

Darden and his wife, Gail, have three children.
