BorgWarner to Supply Regulated Two-Stage Turbocharging Technology For BMW 5 Series Diesel
CHICAGO, Nov. 17, 2004 -- BorgWarner Turbo Systems will supply its market-leading regulated two-stage turbocharging (R2S(TM)) systems to BMW for its new, 3.0-liter, 6-cylinder diesel engine for the BMW 5-series. The engine debuted at the Geneva Motorshow in March. With about 67kW/I, the engine has the highest power density of any passenger-car diesel engine.
"The use of regulated 2-stage turbocharging, where one turbo actually feeds boosted air to a second, higher pressure unit in a controlled fashion, is a passenger-car industry first," said Lee Wilson, President and General Manager, BorgWarner Turbo Systems. "We are pleased to be at the forefront of the market with this product-leading technology, which exemplifies BorgWarner's ability to develop systems that combine superior performance with reduced emissions and improved fuel economy."
The R2S(TM) developed by BorgWarner Turbo Systems with BMW AG is a regulated 2-stage turbocharging system that allows continuously variable adaptation of the turbine and compressor side for every operating point of the engine. Regulated 2-stage turbocharging solves the historic conflict between high torques at very low speeds and maximum power at high speeds. The regulated 2-stage turbocharging system consists of two turbochargers of differing sizes connected in series.
"We at BorgWarner Turbo Systems are delighted to begin a relationship with BMW," Wilson said. "We look forward to exceeding our new customer's expectations with this sophisticated charging system."
