Race Ramblings From The Hat Man
Now that I got that out of the way . . .
Racing season is fast winding down. With most major series done for the '04 season, only NASCAR, with it's Ford Championship Weekend set for next week in Homestead, really has anything left.
The hardcore racing industry meets for it's annual trade show, Performance Racing Industry, in four weeks, Dec. 9-11 in Indianapolis. The show is a week later than usual this year, meaning that many of the NASCAR Nextel Cup teams that were usually in NY for the annual banquet, will be able to attend this year. This is also the last year for PRI in Indy, as next year it moves south to sunny Orlando, FL!
I'll be at PRI for the duration, my 14th year, staying at the Omni Severin, and hanging my hat (pardon my pun), nightly at Ike and Jonesy's! Hope to see you there!
Here's who won what this past weekend:
NASCAR @ Darlington International Raceway - Jimmie Johnson is downright on fire! With the Nextel Cup series in Darlington for the Southern 500, Johnson, driving the Lowe's Home Improvement Chevy, took his fourth win in the last five races. It's going to come down to the final race at Homestead to decide this year's Inaugural Nextel Cup Champion. With 180 points for the win, the top five in points, (Kurt Busch - Leader, Jimmie Johnson -18, Jeff Gordon -21, Dale Earnhardt, Jr. -72 and Mark Martin -82), all have a chance to win. In Saturday's Busch Series BI-LO 200, Busch-whacker Jamie McMurray, driving for Rusty Wallace's DuraFlame Dodge team, took the win. By finishing 4th, Martin Truex, in Dale Earnhardt Jr's Chance 2 Motorsports Chevy, clinched the 2004 Busch Series Championship. Friday at Darlington, Kasey Kahne, driving the Team ASE/Carquest Dodge won the Craftsman Truck Series Darlington 200.
NHRA @ Pomona Raceway - The NHRA Powerade Drag Racing series was at it's home in Pomona, CA for the season ending 40th annual Automobile Club of Southern California NHRA Finals, and it was a great weekend for the 2004 season champions, as all three notched wins. In Top Fuel, Tony Schumacher put more icing on his championship cake, driving the US Army Dragster to victory over Morgan Lucas. In Funny Car, John Force, driving the Castrol GTX Mustang, took the win. In Pro Stock, Greg Anderson, driving the Summit Racing Equipment Grand Am, roared to the win! By qualifying for the event in Pro Stock Bike, Andrew Hines, on the Screaming Eagle/Vance & Hines Harley Davidson, became the youngest NHRA Powerade Champion (21) ever. Angelle Savoie won the event on the US Army Suzuki.
