Apogee Announces a Cooperative Research Agreement to Develop New Generation of Nanoscale Sensors
NORWOOD, Mass.--Nov. 1, 20045, 2004--Apogee Technology, Inc. (AMEX: ATA), today announced that its MEMS Division, an emerging designer and developer of Micro Electro Mechanical Systems ("MEMS") silicon devices, had entered into a cooperative agreement with The Research Foundation of State University of New York at Stony Brook and The Center for Advanced Sensor Technology (Sensor CAT) to jointly develop technologies that will enable a new generation of ultra-sensitive micro-sized sensors. The research will focus on combining nano-composite materials and silicon-based microfabrication processes to produce sensors for the industrial, automotive, medical, military and homeland security markets.Under the cooperative agreement, Apogee, Sensor CAT and the Strategic Partnership for Industrial Resurgence (SPIR) will contribute resources to develop technology that is intended to increase the performance and reduce the cost of micro-sized sensors used in mechanical and environmental monitoring. Apogee will have the exclusive option to license and commercialize the technology developed under the agreement.
Glenn Fricano, Apogee's Director of the MEMS Division, said, "This agreement supports our initiative to develop sensors based upon our investment in MEMS intellectual property, manufacturing process and product designs. We are currently commercializing MEMS pressure sensors for automotive applications using our existing technology base. With this agreement we expect to leverage government investments and academic research to develop new manufacturing technology that will enable us to produce advanced sensors for a wide range of applications. We are very pleased to be working with such prestigious organizations."
Dr. Peter Shkolnikov, Deputy Director of Sensor CAT, said, "We are very pleased to work with Apogee to develop and commercialize this advanced technology and to help create and retain sensor-related jobs and business in New York State."
