Mitsumi Selects Microtune's Single-Chip Analog/DigitalTuner for Set-Top Box RF Module Subsystem

PLANO, Texas--Nov. 1, 20045, 2004--Deploying Microtune's high-performance MT2111 silicon tuner as the core RF component, Mitsumi develops an Integrated Tuner/Demodulator Subsystem that reduces development cost and time for cable set-top box manufacturers.

Building on its continued momentum in the worldwide digital set-top box market, Microtune, Inc. today announced that its high-performance analog/digital silicon tuner, the MicroTuner(TM) MT2111, is enabling high-quality TV reception in a new radio frequency (RF) module of Mitsumi Electronics Corporation. Mitsumi's high-function module, a complete RF-to-baseband subsystem, significantly reduces the development time and cost to original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) in incorporating critical tuning functions in advanced cable set-top boxes.

Mitsumi Electronics Corp., a subsidiary of Mitsumi Electric Co. Ltd., is one of the world's largest manufacturers of computer peripherals and electronic components with manufacturing plants located worldwide. Its electronic components include integrated circuits (ICs), connectors, RF tuners and modules that are sold through OEM and distribution channels. Microtune is a leader in silicon tuner technology with a reputation for RF engineering innovation and excellence.

Mitsumi's module, the DCT33-J02D, is an integrated QAM tuner demodulator. It is a pre-tested, manufacturing-ready solution that allows cable set-top boxes to receive, tune and demodulate digital cable signals. Targeted initially for the Japanese market, the DCT33-J02D module is available today.

"Set-top box manufacturers are driving toward more complex features and functionality and having a tuner with optimized performance in an ultra-small size is key," said Mr. Keisho Fujiwara, General Manager, Engineering Department, AVC Division, Mitsumi. "The MT2111 is cutting-edge tuner technology that meets worldwide reception standards, delivers superior picture and sound quality, and enables advanced set-top box features, including personal video recording capability. By combining Microtune's products with our systems engineering, we developed an RF set-top box solution that streamlines production and accelerates time-to-volume production for cable equipment manufacturers."

"Mitsumi brings advanced technologies and expertise to the broadband marketplace, and we are excited that the MT2111 was the tuner of choice for its set-top box tuner module," said James A. Fontaine, Microtune CEO and President. "The Mitsumi engineers are taking full advantage of the performance in our MT2111 tuner and using it to provide a flexible, ready-to-implement RF solution."

THE MICROTUNER MT2111

The MT2111 tuner brings unparalleled integration of RF technology by combining the tuner, low noise amplifier, intermediate frequency amplifier, mixers, oscillators, and input controls on the same chip. Packaged in a miniature 1/4-inch square chip, this integrated design approach offers a low RF implementation cost combined with superior linearity, image rejection and frequency response. The MT2111 allows manufacturers such as Mitsumi to build on existing production-ready modular solutions by adding a silicon tuner for reduced size, component cost and functionality.

When integrated into modules for set top boxes, the MT2111 is engineered to offer superior reception for cable broadcast applications including high definition (HD), consistent with extended cable services, such as personal video recorders, consumer IP-based video phones and video conferencing systems.

MICROTUNE COMMITMENT TO JAPANESE MARKET AND CUSTOMERS

"This design win reflects the results of our commitment to the Japanese market," Mr. Fontaine added. "A sales and application engineering team, located in the Tokyo area, supports Mitsumi and our other Japanese customers. The local team understands the business dynamics and is dedicated to providing the superior, customized service that can support their success with Microtune products."
