Ex-Indy Pilot Wins AMA Supermoto Title

LAS VEGAS November 13, 2004; The AP reported that former Indy-car racer Jeff Ward claimed the AMA Supermoto championship with a victory Saturday in the Red Bull A-Go-Go.

He chased Jurgen Kunzel for most of the 18-lap season finale on a 1-mile course. Ward moved his Honda past Kunzel's KTM to take the lead with two laps remaining and held on for his third victory of the year.

"I put a little Supercross block pass on him," Ward said of the decisive pass on Kunzel. "Its hard to believe I'm back winning AMA championships again. I never dreamed this would happen."

Ward won seven AMA Motocross and Supercross titles before retiring from motorcycle racing in the early 1990s to pursue a career in open-wheel racing. The former Indianapolis 500 Rookie of the Year Award returned last year to motorcycle racing.
