Sterling Commerce Selected by Intelligent Enterprise Magazine as RealWare Award Finalist for Business Process Management

COLUMBUS, Ohio--Nov. 9, 2004--

Gentran Integration Suite recognized for demonstrating true accomplishment in enabling new levels of business performance

Sterling Commerce, in conjunction with its customer, Railinc Corp., today announced it has been named by Intelligent Enterprise magazine as a 2004 RealWare Finalist in the Best Business Process Management Application category. Presented annually since 1993 by Intelligent Enterprise magazine, the RealWare Awards recognize outstanding customer applications demonstrating innovative IT solutions and measurable business benefits for the intelligent enterprise.

Sterling Commerce's winning entry highlighted Railinc's use of Gentran Integration Suite, a modular software suite designed to provide businesses with a scalable, strategic integration platform. Users can deploy its state-of-the-art integration broker architecture tactically for both internal and external business systems integration while incrementally adding expanded capabilities as needed over time.

"Business applications that enable an enterprise to streamline business processes, increase customer intelligence and enable new levels of performance look outstanding on paper, but many stop there," said John Seifert, associate publisher of Intelligent Enterprise and national director of the Network Computing EAG. "The Intelligent Enterprise 'RealWare' awards pick up where data sheets leave off as we judge enterprise applications on their true valor, where they matter most - in practice. Business applications strategists need to know why an application will add value and how that application can be integrated into their existing IT architecture - RealWare finalists have proven their solutions achieve these requirements."

"We are honored to be selected by a distinguished panel of editors, analysts, and business leaders as a RealWare award finalist," said Nolan Rosen, Sterling Commerce's chief marketing officer. "And, we are delighted that Gentran Integration Suite has made a cutting-edge business difference for Railinc. Integrating data and information outside the corporate firewall, and making that data actionable through business process management is crucial to business success, and Railinc was insightful to devise a business strategy that will continue to give them a competitive edge."

Railinc Corp., a leading provider of information technology services to the North American rail industry, needed a reliable, flexible solution that would help them be successful in a new market, provide customized solutions and support a variety of standards so its customers could connect to any business partner, regardless of their technology. In addition, the solution had to support Railinc's existing environment.

"Gentran Integration Suite was the only product we found on the market offering all the solutions we were looking for: flexibility, scalability and fit with our existing business infrastructure," said Allen West, vice president of Information Technology, Railinc. "The integration with our environment was painless and provided an enhanced capability without purchasing additional products."

To date, Railinc has expanded its offerings to existing customers by giving them more value-added services and has grown beyond its traditional railroad customer base. By providing real-time access to transaction data, Railinc has enhanced customer service options and deepened relationships with customers.
