OSRAM Opto Semiconductors Inc. continues to build on its reputation as a top developer of innovative light-emitting diode (LED) and organic light-emitting diode (OLED) technology by showcasing two new products, demonstrating a portfolio of existing lighting technology and exhibiting its sensational LED-lit booth at Electronica 2004 in Munich, Germany. New products include the company's next-generation, surface-mount technology (SMT) devices, the Molded Interconnect Device Light-Emitting Diodes (MIDLEDs), and the new warm-white Golden DRAGON(TM). These two headline products reflect OSRAM's innovative research and development capabilities and address the varying needs of today's marketplace.

Warm-White Golden DRAGON LED
OSRAM's warm-white Golden DRAGON LEDs combine familiar LED benefits such as long life, small size and rugged design with a pleasant warm color. Used wherever special lighting is needed, these versatile, general-lighting LEDs are opening up new applications in reading lights, mood lighting, display cabinets and car interiors.
New MIDLED SMT Devices
OSRAM's next-generation, SMT devices, called Molded Interconnect Device Light Emitting Diodes (MIDLEDs), have a unique construction that offers electrical contact pads on both the bottom and side of the package. This enables the same part to be either used as a top-facing (Z axis) or side-facing (X axis) solution, providing greater design flexibility. The MIDLED package additionally provides an internal metalized reflector as well as a beam angle of +/- 20 degrees, enabling three times the output intensity of existing TOPLED(R) emitters at a fraction of the size. The MIDLED package, with its internal lens, is ideal for applications where highly focused infrared light is required, yet there is no space for large components with lenses. These applications include steering-angle sensors, rain sensors, light curtains, miniature interrupters, coin changers, reflective sensors, IR data transmitters and remote controls.
Additional Technology on Display
OSRAM Opto Semiconductors is not only presenting two new products and showcasing its existing line of lighting solutions, but it is also celebrating this year's Electronica with a booth lit entirely by LEDs. The lighting, sparkling with fascinating effects and special light pools, demonstrates the company's diverse and exceptional lighting expertise. Canvases on which star shapes appear in ever-changing colors are the first things that attract the attention of visitors. Six colored spotlights provide the colorful effects with twelve LEDs in red, blue and green. Special optics, normally used in traffic lights, further enhances the effect. And in the background are 70 spotlights, each with 24 white LEDs, that provide the background lighting for the stand. Eleven small spotlights, also equipped with white LEDs, light the conference rooms and the kitchen area.
High-power Lasers for Safety Systems
The company will additionally present its portfolio of high-power lasers for the automobile industry, which includes numerous standard products as well as customer-specific developments. For use in adaptive cruise control (ACC) sensors and near infrared (IR) night vision systems, these solutions boast a lifespan of more than ten years and an operating temperature range of -40 to +85 degrees, meeting the stringent requirements of the automobile industry.
Advanced Power TOPLED
The Advanced Power TOPLED(R), also on display, is the latest addition to the family of ultra-bright light sources from OSRAM Opto Semiconductors. This mid-level lighting solution, with brightness between the company's Power TOPLED and Golden DRAGON LED, is ideal for applications where a brightness/size compromise is critical. The Advanced Power TOPLED has a similar package to that of the Power TOPLED, but it has six LEDs instead of four and is suitable for standard solder processes. It is available in white, red and yellow for applications in tail-light clusters, display backlighting, mobile phones and as a light source for industrial signal luminaries.
