STMicroelectronics Demonstrates Complete Convergence in the Car and in the Home at Electronica 2004

World Leader in System Solutions Showcases Integrated Automotive On-Board Applications and End-To-End Home Connectivity and Entertainment

STMicroelectronics Will Be at Electronica 2004, November 9-12, in Munich, Stand 207, Hall A5

MUNICH, Germany, Nov. 8 -- At the Electronica 2004 trade show this week, STMicroelectronics , one of the world's leading semiconductor manufacturers, will demonstrate a variety of System-on-Chip (SoC) devices for completely converged environments, with the focus on the Car and Home. The ST stand at the New Munich Trade Fair Center will host two real-life demonstrations of fully integrated, end-to-end solutions for automotive and home connectivity.

The Multimedia in the Car demonstration reveals a unique implementation of telematics and integrated subsystems based on the broad portfolio of the Company's SoC devices. The demo setup, which consists of a mobile unit driven around Munich, a static unit at the booth, and the system server, is centered on ST's Java-Enhanced Telematics (JET) System.

The core of the JET is formed by the STA 2059 telematics and low-end navigation chip, which provides all necessary interfaces and the high processing power to handle all required tasks. The GPS receiver-and-decoder device is coupled with ST's Bluetooth module, which interconnects the system with external mobile devices, such as cellular phones and PDAs.

System connectivity supports both SMS (Short Messaging Service) and transparent data communication, either via circuit-switched or packet-switched GPRS (General Packet Radio Service) connections. The implemented Java support, which enables terminals to download and execute Java programs in the JET, markedly enhances its flexibility.

ST products, such as MP3 decoder, and digital AM/FM receiver, are used in the audio and tuner section of the automotive demo. The Company's SoC devices are also present in the power supply, as well as in the interfaces between the modules and blocks.

In addition to the major demo setup described above, numerous demos and detailed presentations will be featured, proving the breadth of the Company's automotive portfolio, such as the door LIN (Local Interconnect Network) cluster for window, mirror, and door-lock control; CMOS-camera-based blind spot detector; DVD-on-chip solution for in-car video entertainment; and Electronic Toll Collection kit (ETC).

The Multimedia in the Home demo setup presents ST's state-of-the-art solutions for data distribution and processing in home and SOHO (Small Office Home Office) environments. End-to-end communication and entertainment applications feature the Company's latest DSL (Digital Subscriber Line) and WLAN (Wireless Local Area Network) products, best-in-class set-top box ICs, its award-winning mobile multimedia platform, and innovative microelectro- mechanical systems (MEMS).

ST will demonstrate its latest 12-channel ADSL2+ chipset, CopperWing12, which for the first time integrates both ATM (Asynchronous Transfer Mode) and IP (Internet Protocol) interfaces.

The multiple video-streaming demonstration unveils one of the first WLAN chipsets in the world, certified for all currently used WiFi encoding standards, to achieve data speeds up to 54Mbit/s and higher.

ST's world-leading portfolio of set-top box (STB) products will be represented by high-definition satellite broadcast projected on a 50-inch plasma display, as well as a low-cost Bluetooth-connected STB, showcased as part of the demo solution for video-on-demand applications via ADSL (Asynchronous Digital Subscriber Line).

Another demo station features ST's low-cost turnkey ADSL client chipset for Internet telephony (VoIP) and Ethernet connectivity in home and SOHO environments.

Visitors to Electronica 2004 will have chance to gain first-hand experience with the most integrated single-chip solution on the market for mobile multimedia, ST's Nomadik platform. The exhibition also introduces several innovative MEMS applications, including a joystick with an integrated electrostatic gyroscope.

Apart from the two main demo environments, ST will present its best-in-class solutions in Metering, Factory Automation, Lighting, and Home Appliance. Each exhibit is supported by a real reference-design board and an interactive touch screen, providing application and product details.

ST's strong environmental responsibility is physically represented at the show in the form of special floor tiles, produced from the Company's worldwide front-end and back-end waste. Recycled tiles, placed at the entrance area of the booth, were manufactured in Verona, Italy, as part of ST's Waste Management Project aiming at zero landfill for all its production waste.
