AIAG Educates Automotive Industry on RFID Implementation and Applications

DETROIT, Nov. 1, 2004 -- The Automotive Industry Action Group (AIAG) continues to take the lead on one of the hottest technologies being employed in the automotive industry-radio frequency identification (RFID). To help automotive companies learn more about real-world RFID implementation and applications, AIAG is holding a conference on Nov. 4, 2004, at the Holiday Inn Livonia-West in Livonia, Mich.

The leading RFID event for the global automotive supply chain, the AIAG RFID Summit will assemble experts from DaimlerChrysler Corp., General Motors Corp., Michelin North America, Inc. and Avery Dennison, and from the Department of Defense and EPCglobal Inc. to share their implementations of RFID. A key topic on the agenda is the newly revised AIAG B-11: Tire and Wheel Label Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) Standard that potentially can provide a one-tag-fits-all RFID solution for both the automotive and retail industries. The event also will feature an exhibit floor of emerging technologies and applications from approximately 15 vendors and solution providers.

"Although companies are interested in the technology, some are unsure how to apply RFID or integrate it into their existing automatic identification and data capture systems," said Linda R. Plawecki, acting executive director of AIAG. "Automotive suppliers need to see real-world deployments to understand how to make the technology work for them. The AIAG RFID Summit will demonstrate to them how automotive companies and other industries are using the technology in conjunction with their present automatic identification systems to further improve traceability."

Registration fees for the AIAG RFID Summit are $50 for AIAG members and $100 for non-members. The event will run from 8:00 a.m. through 4:30 p.m. To register, call AIAG's customer service department at (248) 358-3003 or visit http://www.aiag.org/ .

In another effort to educate the automotive industry on RFID, AIAG took part in a panel discussion on Oct. 28, 2004, titled RFID Rap Session: Better than Bar Codes? A Full Expose of the Benefits and Challenges of RFID Implementation at AutoLog 2004 in Dearborn, Mich.

Participating in the panel discussion was Morris Brown, materials management product manager of AIAG, who clarified some misconceptions about RFID and provided valuable insight into industry benefits from using the technology and the AIAG B-11 standard.

Founded in 1982, AIAG is headquartered in the metro Detroit area. Its more than 1,600 member companies include North American, European and Asia- Pacific OEMs and suppliers to the automotive industry with combined annual sales of more than $850 billion. A not-for-profit association, AIAG's primary goals are to reduce cost and complexity within the automotive supply chain and to improve speed to market, product quality, employee health-and-safety and the environment.
