BorgWarner TorqTransfer Systems Launches Torque Management System on Hyundai Tucson
TROY, Mich., Oct. 27, 2004 -- BorgWarner TorqTransfer Systems has begun production of its InterActive Torque Management (ITM)(TM) system for the new Hyundai Tucson crossover sports-utility vehicle.
"We are proud to launch another application of BorgWarner ITM-I(TM), and we're delighted that drivers of the all-new Hyundai Tucson will benefit from the enhanced vehicle traction and stability that the system provides," said Cindy Niekamp, President and General Manager, BorgWarner TorqTransfer Systems. Production of the Tucson began in Ulsan, Korea in March. Front-wheel drive and optional all-wheel drive models of the 2005 vehicle are now available in North America, along with 4-cylinder and V6 engines.
The patented BorgWarner system converts the front-wheel drive-based platform to all-wheel drive, using electronic sensors and microcomputer controls to minimize front-wheel slip by automatically transferring power to the rear wheels. This enhances vehicle handling and traction by optimally utilizing the grip at all four wheels. At highway speeds, the system automatically reduces power transfer to the rear wheels to enhance fuel economy over other systems. In addition, because ITM-I(TM) is microcomputer-controlled and networked with other vehicle systems, it works in cooperation with anti-lock brake and electronic stability programs to further enhance traction and stability.
As a complete torque management system integrator, BorgWarner TorqTransfer Systems develops and supplies the ITM(TM) hardware, control strategy and the electronic control unit. The ITM(TM) systems are produced at BorgWarner TorqTransfer Systems in Seneca, South Carolina.
BorgWarner TorqTransfer Systems is a leading independent global designer and producer of transfer cases and torque distribution management systems for four-wheel and all-wheel drive vehicles for the passenger car, crossover vehicle, sports-utility and light-truck markets. These systems enhance vehicle stability, security, and drivability.
