RINGERS GLOVES WEEKEND WRAP-UP
Sunoco Super Series Crowns Champion
Indianapolis – (October 25, 2004) The Sunoco Super Series (SSS) wrapped up
their 2004 season with the Inaugural CRA/Salem Speedfest at Salem Speedway
(Ind.) on Sunday.
Chuck Barnes Jr., 22, from Louisville claimed his first ever Sunoco Super
Series Championship.
Barnes’ day started off by shattering the track record with a 16.331 second
lap at the ½ mile high-banks.
Barnes needed to finish 17th or better over the second place car of Scott
Hantz to secure his title. Barnes finished fifth.
Barnes will collect his honors at the Sunoco Super Series banquet on January
15, 2005 at the Crowne Plaza in downtown Indianapolis.
Penske Racing South teammates Ryan Newman and Rusty Wallace started on the
front row together for Sunday’s NASCAR Nextel Cup Series Subway 500 from
Martinsville Speedway.
At the end of the 500-lap race, Newman was the highest finishing Penske
driver in second. Wallace ended up in the 10th position, while Travis Kvapil and
Brendan Gaughan finished 21st and 34th respectively.
The NASCAR Nextel Cup Series heads to the Atlanta Motor Speedway this
weekend for the Bass Pro Shops MBNA 500.
On a sad note, a plane owned by Hendrick Motorsports went down while en
route to the Martinsville Speedway on Sunday.
The plane was carrying 10 passengers, eight of which were members of
Hendrick Motorsports, including Ricky Hendrick, son of Rick Hendrick; John Hendrick,
brother to Rick Hendrick and president of Hendrick Motorsports; John’s two
daughters, Jennifer and Kimberly; Jeff Turner, General Manager of Hendrick
Motorsports; Randy Dorton, chief engine builder for Hendrick and two pilots
employed by Hendrick Motorsports, Dick Tracy and Liz Morrison.
The two remaining passengers were identified as Joe Jackson, DuPont
executive and Scott Lathram, Tony Stewart’s pilot.
The cause of the crash has yet to be determined, although there was heavy
fog in the area at the time of the crash.
Ringers Gloves would like to extend its deepest and heartfelt sympathies to
Hendrick Motorsports, as well as the family, friends and loved ones of the
passengers that were aboard the plane.
