SiRF GPS Powers LG Electronics' Next-Generation Telematics Platform for GM OnStar System
SiRFstarIIt(TM) Chipset Provides Location and Navigation Functions for GM's Next-Generation OnStar System
SAN JOSE, Calif., Oct. 18 -- SiRF Technology, Inc. , a leading supplier of GPS enabled location technology, announced today that its SiRFstarIIt GPS chipset has been chosen for LG Electronics' new telematics platform for General Motors' OnStar System. The SiRFstarIIt solution will deliver the GPS location technology for LG's Telematics Control Unit (TCU) to enable the best possible locate and navigate capabilities in a small cost-effective footprint.
A leading wireless handset provider, LG Electronics is entering the in-vehicle telematics market with a prestigious design win with General Motors for its OnStar program, the world's highest volume telematics system. LG's TCU will provide in-vehicle safety, security, and information services for the OnStar system, using GPS and wireless technologies. LG's products will be installed in General Motors' vehicles as early as 2005.
"SiRF's global leadership experience in GPS technology supports LG's strategy to penetrate the worldwide automotive markets," said Soung Hyun Um, vice president and director of Digital Media Research Lab at LG Electronics. "We are very pleased to partner with such a responsive supplier who offers market leading GPS performance as well as the support infrastructure needed to address the automotive market."
"This is one of our most significant and strategic design wins as it enables SiRF to greatly expand our presence in the fast-growing market for in-vehicle telematics systems with partners like LG," said Kanwar Chadha, founder and vice president of marketing for SiRF Technology. "General Motors just announced plans to increase production of OnStar-equipped GM vehicles to three million units for the 2006 model year, highlighting the increasing importance of this in-vehicle safety, security and communications service."
SiRFstarIIt: Solution of Choice for Automobile Navigation & Telematics Applications
The SiRFstarIIt chipset is designed specifically to deliver the most cost-effective, powerful, and accurate GPS and dead reckoning performance available today for automobile navigation applications. As a "tracker solution," SiRFstar IIt separates the real-time critical and non real-time critical tasks between the dedicated GPS chipset and the host CPU, thus dramatically simplifying the integration of GPS navigation software on the host system. SiRFstarIIt significantly lowers overall system level costs by utilizing spare memory and CPU resources of the host CPU system, and simplifying the printed circuit board (PCB) layout.
The SiRFstarIIt solution includes a GPS tracking engine, which obtains and tracks satellite signals, integrated with an on-chip analog to digital converter (ADC); an RF receiver IC; and the accompanying SiRFNav or SiRFDrive software to compute position, time and velocity. The optional SiRFDrive software combines GPS and dead reckoning measurements to provide continuous and accurate navigation in even the most challenging operating environments such as in covered parking lots, tunnels and in urban canyons. This dead reckoning data optimizes and cross-checks the GPS function, resulting in one of the most accurate location solution available today for automotive applications.
