DETROIT, Michigan, October 18 -- Valeo, a leader in original equipment automotive electronics and connective systems, today introduced its innovative application of advanced data communications technology based on Power Line Communication (PLC) technology. The technology will make its debut at the Convergence 2004 show in Detroit where Ford Motor Company's Advanced Engineering group will display a Ford Freestar vehicle equipped with the PLC system.
Until now, the power and information required for each electrical function were transmitted by separate wires. Multiplexing reduced the amount of wiring needed in a vehicle, but the growing demand by vehicle manufacturers calls for the further reduction of weight, volume and cost of electrical architecture. Valeo's PLC technology enables data to be transmitted directly on the electrical system's existing power lines through the use of signal modulation. By using the vehicle's electrical wiring to transmit information, vehicle manufacturers are able to use fewer wires while maintaining the same functionality of as a full wiring harness.
Power Line Communication systems work as a data transfer system, similar to that used in Internet and consumer electronics applications. Valeo's PLC system is a new and efficient way of communicating electronic data throughout the vehicle.
Through a simplified electrical architecture, PLC offers car makers the opportunity to increase reliability and flexibility as well as achieve space savings. The system meets the growing demand for wiring systems that can easily adapt to the future addition of more electronics features without the need to add complexity into the electrical network.
Using signal modulation to communicate data across the same wires that already supply power to the vehicle's electronics, PLC technology works in a similar fashion, and offers the same benefits as multiplex systems without the complexity. PLC provides vehicle manufacturers with greater design flexibility and installation simplicity - rear modules for example where an increasing number of electronics functions are being added, some wiring for optional extras can be completely removed. Also aftermarket electronic additions are made simpler, which is a major benefit to consumers.
