Freescale Semiconductor and Metrowerks Advance Linux Technology for the Automotive Market

DETROIT--Oct. 1, 20048, 2004--

Linux Board Support Package (BSP) for Freescale(TM) Semiconductor mobileGT(TM) Architecture and Total5200(TM) Development Platform Unleashes the Promise of Linux(TM) Technology for Automotive Markets

Freescale Semiconductor, Inc. and Metrowerks Corporation continue their commitment to providing leading-edge development solutions for the automotive industry with the release of a Linux Board Support Package (BSP) optimized for the mobileGT(TM) architecture and Total5200 Development Platform.

The BSP was specifically designed for the Freescale Digital, Audio, Radio and Telematics (DART) Division to help automotive OEMs and their Tier One suppliers incorporate the business and technical advantages of embedded Linux technology into their next-generation navigation, telematics, handsfree phone, radio/telematics hybrids, infotainment and driver information system designs.

Developers can leverage the Metrowerks Linux BSP to create a variety of networked automotive products capable of featuring integrated wireless, graphics, audio and GPS technology.

"The world's leading automotive manufacturers are looking for viable, affordable ways to bring Linux technology to the automotive market on a well-proven, automotive-centric platform, such as the mobileGT architecture," said Bill Pfaff, vice president and general manager of Freescale Semiconductor's DART business unit. "The introduction of the Metrowerks Linux BSP paves the way for more viable and affordable products to be delivered by the major Tier One suppliers. By leveraging our relationship with Metrowerks, this latest Linux BSP was designed to fully support the key capabilities of the mobileGT architecture and the Total5200 Development Platform."

The BSP integrates with a broad range of Metrowerks products to provide Linux development solutions for the mobileGT architecture and Total5200 Development Platform that support the full development process - from board bring-up and Linux kernel-level debugging to applications creation and testing.

The BSP supports the graphics, audio, Control Area Network (CAN), USB, Ethernet, ATA and UART features of the Total5200. Metrowerks also offers a comprehensive software solution for the Total5200 architecture, including CodeWarrior(TM) board bring-up and application development tools and CodeTEST(TM) Software Analysis Tools.

The mobileGT architecture and the Total5200 Development Platform are designed for quick set-up and installation. The Metrowerks BSP is engineered to take advantage of the Total5200's capabilities including quick, easy implementation of multimedia applications, a touch screen subsystem with reconfigurable controls for navigation, and other driver-information systems.
