Renesas Technology Introduces Compact 16-Bit Flash Microcontrollers with On-Chip CAN Controller for Automotive, Industrial, and Automation Applications
DETROIT--Oct. 1, 20048, 2004--Devices in the Economical, High-Performance M16C/29 Group Have Small, Low-Pin Count Packages and Provide Comprehensive Peripheral Functions |
Renesas Technology America, Inc. today announced six 16-bit M16C/29 group microcontrollers (MCUs) that provide flash memory, comprehensive peripheral functions, and an interface circuit that supports the controller-area network (CAN version 2.0B) standard. The new devices, which expand the M16C/Tiny series, have small, low-pin-count packages: 64-pin (10mm x 10mm) or 80-pin (12mm x 12mm) LQFPs. They meet the functional, environmental and space requirements of many automotive, industrial and factory-automation applications. The MCUs are also recommended for other embedded system applications, especially those that control three-phase or single-phase AC motors.
System engineers have a choice of M16C/29 on-chip flash memory capacities for system optimization: 128KB, 96KB or 64KB. The MCUs also provide two 2KB blocks of flash memory for program and data storage. Optionally, that 4KB can deliver a 10,000-cycle (minimum) rewrite capability for replacing external EEPROM. The device has a Suspend mode to ensure safe operation and has a maximum RAM capacity of 12KB.
The MCUs in the M16C/29 Group have a 16-bit M16C/60 CPU core that achieves a 50ns minimum instruction execution time at 20MHz maximum operating frequency using a 3.0V to 5.5V power supply voltage. In common with other devices in the Renesas M16C family, they keep low electro-magnetic interference (EMI), consume low power, offer high electro-magnetic susceptibility (EMS), and achieve good code efficiency.
The peripheral functions built into the MCUs include 16-bit timers (one with input-capture/output-compare capabilities), a single-shunt control function that simplifies controlling 3-phase motors, a serial I/O interface, and a hardware multi-master I2C bus interface. Additional on-chip functions are a 10-bit A/D converter (16 or 27 channels), DMA controller, frequency change function for the on-chip oscillation circuit, and a circuit that ensures reliable start-up after a reset. General-purpose models operate from -20 to +85 degrees C, while automotive models are available in versions that operate from -40 to +85 degrees C or from -40 to +125 degrees C.
To speed the development of systems that use M16C/29 MCUs, Renesas provides the PC7501 full-specification emulator as a development environment. Also, engineers can perform high-speed debugging from a PC using a USB (Universal Serial Bus) interface. In the future, Renesas plans to offer a small, low-priced on-chip debugger that can be used as an ultra-small flash writer. Another future support tool is a low-priced development environment that can be used with devices in both the R8C/Tiny series and H8/300H Tiny series.
Renesas Technology will continue to develop M16C/29 Group products to meet evolving market needs. The technology roadmap includes versions with on-chip mask ROM.
