Terayon Cable Modem, with Microtune's New Low-Power MT2060 Single-Chip Tuner, Achieves Euro-DOCSIS 2.0 Certification

PLANO, Texas--Oct. 1, 20048, 2004--

Award Reinforces RF Performance and Robustness of Microtune's New High-Performance, Low-Power Broadband Tuner

Microtune(R), Inc. today announced that a cable modem from Terayon Communications Systems, Inc. , built on Microtune's new low-power MicroTuner(TM) MT2060 single-chip tuner and MicroStreamer(TM) MT1550 upstream amplifier, achieved certification to the Euro-DOCSIS(R) 2.0 standard. Deploying Microtune's silicon technology as the radio frequency (RF) electronics, Terayon's TJ721x cable modem certified in the recently completed testing of the Euro-DOCSIS Certification Board.

Euro-DOCSIS 2.0, and its U.S. counterpart, DOCSIS 2.0, are cable industry specifications for interoperability that support the most advanced cable access services--high-speed Internet access, voice, gaming and multimedia services.

"We congratulate Terayon on its newly certified cable modem and we are proud to have contributed to its certification success," said Albert H. Taddiken, Chief Operating Officer of Microtune. "The MT2060 was engineered as a very low-power silicon tuner, targeted to bandwidth-intensive applications where integration, reliability and power consumption are critical design issues. The certification award testifies to our tuner's RF performance and robustness as measured against rigorous industry metrics. At the same time, the tuner is based on an architecture field-proven in real-world cable environments, an important consideration for cable equipment manufacturers in developing high-quality voice and data solutions."

"The introduction of the Terayon TJ721x extends our market leadership in cable modems by providing a high-performance, yet cost-effective, solution for cable operators to deliver not just high-speed Internet access but also the rich and intelligent services that customers demand," said Joe Benigno, Senior Director of Product Marketing. "Microtune's new low-power MT2060 tuner provides us with excellent price/performance, power efficiency and reliability and supports the continued evolution of our cable modem platform for expanded residential and commercial data, voice and multimedia services."

MICROTUNER MT2060 BROADBAND TUNER

Fabricated in silicon germanium for very high performance, the MT2060 is a complete broadband tuner with integrated first intermediate frequency (IF) filter, low-noise amplifier and RF and IF controls. It functions as the critical RF 'gateway' in consumer premises equipment, receiving digital data from the head end for use by the rest of the system's electronics. The MT2060 is packaged into a miniature, multi-functional 1/4-inch square chip that operates with a 3.3-Volt supply. The tuner consumes only one Watt of power and features a software-selectable operating mode that dissipates a mere 800 milliWatts, the lowest power consumption for a high-performance silicon tuner in the industry.

THE DATA OVER CABLE SERVICE INTERFACE SPECIFICATIONS (DOCSIS)

DOCSIS and Euro-DOCSIS are industry-accepted standards that define the interoperability requirements for cable modems involved in high-speed data distribution over cable networks. They provide equipment suppliers and cable operators a fast, market-oriented method for attaining and recognizing compliance.
