Spansion Improves Automotive Power Train Performance with New High-Speed Flash Memory
DETROIT--Oct. 1, 20048, 2004--System Designers Rely on Spansion(TM) Flash Memory to Improve Vehicles' Environmental Impact, Safety and Performance |
Spansion LLC, the Flash memory subsidiary of Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. and Fujitsu Limited (TOKYO:6702), today at Convergence 2004 announced it has added a faster, higher density model to its top-selling automotive Floating Gate Flash memory product line. This new 32Mbit burst-mode, simultaneous read/write NOR Flash memory device uses a 32-bit bus to reach frequencies as high as 75 MHz to deliver the fastest memory data throughput for next-generation engine control units (ECUs). The burst mode Flash "gluelessly" interfaces with most high-speed microcontrollers to enable optimum engine performance, fuel efficiency, and meet stringent environmental requirements.
Spansion products are on display this week at the premier automotive electronics conference, Convergence 2004, at the Cobo Convention Center in booth #1059.
"We've raised the bar for automotive Flash memory," said Sylvia Summers, senior vice president and general manager for Spansion's Embedded Business Unit. "Improving and increasing the Flash memory content under the hood will allow more functionality and more sophisticated software to enhance the power train ECU's processor performance and capability. The next generation of power train systems will help deliver cleaner, quieter and smoother running engines and contribute to human comfort and safety in an environmentally responsible way."
Features for Automotive Reliability
The new Floating Gate Flash series of products, models S29CD032G and S29CD016G, are manufactured for performance using 170nm process technology and are available in two densities, 16Mbit and 32Mbit. The 32Mbit model reaches clock rates as high as 75MHz with burst access times as fast as 7.5ns and initial random access times as fast as 48ns. The 16Mbit model features clock rates as high as 66Mhz with high performance read burst rates at 9ns after initial/random access times at 54ns.
Spansion is dedicated to providing the highest level of quality and reliability to its automotive customers. The company has maintained QS9000 certification since 1999 and has recently transitioned to the more stringent ISO/TS 16949:2002 global technical specification.
Other features of the new high-speed Flash memory for electronic systems include:
-- Single power supply operation: 2.5 Volt for system compatibility
-- Simultaneous Read/Write operation for improved system speed, reduced latency
-- Security features including -- Advanced Sector Protection to defend against unauthorized modification and tuners; and 256 bytes of Secure Silicon Sector for storing electronic serial numbers
-- Rugged, high-temperature extended operation up to 125 degrees C, and super extended operation up to 145 degrees C
-- Ultra low-power consumption
Packaging & Availability
The new high-speed automotive Flash part is available in 80-Pin PQFP, 80-ball Fortified BGA packages and Known Good Die (KGD). The 32Mb packaged device is priced at $9.00 (US) in quantities of 10,000, and the 16Mb packaged device begins at $5.50 (US) in quantities of 10,000. Spansion products are available worldwide from AMD and Fujitsu.
Spansion -- Under the Hood, In the Cabin
Automobiles are becoming increasingly reliant on electronics systems to provide vehicle safety, comfort and enjoyment, and lessen the impact on the environment. Systems such as power train, infotainment, telematics and navigation rely on high-quality, reliable Spansion(TM) Flash memory to provide the backbone of performance and reliability. Spansion has achieved substantial market share in the automotive Flash memory market by offering a complete line of Floating Gate and MirrorBit(TM) automotive Flash memory products for under the hood and in-cabin electronics systems.
The high density MirrorBit Flash line is ideal for a range of solutions including in-cabin technologies such as telematics, infotainment and navigation. The low to medium-density Floating Gate line meets the needs for under-the-hood applications, and in-cabin applications such as controller area networks (CAN). And, with the new serial peripheral interface (SPI) product line, Spansion has an opportunity to offer solutions for the emerging DVD audio systems and car radios.
