SAE International Establishes Affiliate Society in UK

PITTSBURGH, October 12 -- The Society of Automotive Engineers International (SAE-I), the world's premier technical society headquartered in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, has recently established SAE-UK, an affiliate society in the United Kingdom incorporating the Institute of Vehicle Engineers (IVehE). SAE International has over 85,000 members from approximately 90 countries. The main objective of establishing the affiliate society is to serve UK-based mobility practitioners by supporting their professional and informational needs. Henceforth, SAE-UK will be able to provide its members with full access to SAE technical publications, programs, professional development seminars and other services.

Speaking recently at the 2005 September Performance Conference jointly organized by the SAE-UK Affiliate and the Welsh Development Agency, the SAE 2005 incoming President Ted Robertson said, "Globalization of the automotive industry is presenting new challenges to mobility engineers worldwide. I am confident that SAE-UK members will play a significant role in supporting the quest for new technologies and promoting the advancement of mobility engineering in the United Kingdom."

SAE-UK members are professional engineers in the automotive, aerospace and off-highway machinery industries. Currently, SAE-UK has over 1,500 members. SAE-I has over 60 SAE chapters within and outside North America, in addition to two affiliate societies in Brazil and India. With this change in status, SAE-UK now becomes the third overseas affiliate society of SAE-I.

Founded in 1905, SAE-I will celebrate its 100th anniversary next year. The society has played a significant role throughout the past century in spearheading and actively supporting the mobility industry's strides into the future. SAE standards are used on a worldwide basis. Next year, SAE will be presenting its annual World Congress from April 11-14, 2005, in Detroit, Michigan, an event designed to attract a number of global automotive companies.
