Zipcar Selects AT&T Wireless to Strengthen its Self-Service, On-Demand Car Rental Technology

Nationwide GPRS Network Paves Way for New Benefits for Zipcar and its Members

CAMBRIDGE, Mass., Oct. 12 -- Zipcar, the new twist on traditional car rental, today announced it has selected AT&T Wireless to help bolster Zipcar's proprietary technology platform enabling self-service, on- demand car rental by the hour or by the day. AT&T Wireless' nationwide GSM(TM)/GPRS wireless data network, coupled with Zipcar's latest platform update, will provide Zipcar with enhanced scalability, support national and global coverage and strengthen its in-car capabilities.

These technology enhancements allow Zipcar to more seamlessly deploy cars for its rapidly increasing member base as well as support companies looking to integrate Zipcar's Fleet Management Platform. The improved level of connectivity will also support Zipcar's future growth and introduction of cutting-edge features and benefits for Zipcar members, including in-car Wi-Fi and Bluetooth services.

According to Scott Griffith, president and chief executive officer of Zipcar, "We now have the ability to incorporate several cutting-edge features and benefits such as location tracking and Internet connectivity," he said. "And, because AT&T Wireless offers a wireless data network based on the GSM global standard, our technology isn't limited to North America should we look to expand our presence outside the US."

Zipcar's diverse fleet of vehicles is parked all around metro Boston, New York and Washington, DC. With Zipcar's patent-pending technology, accessing and using a Zipcar is as easy as getting cash from an ATM. In minutes or up to a year in advance, members can reserve Zipcars online or by phone. When it's their turn to drive, Zipcar members have automated access to Zipcars using a "Zipcard" to simply unlock the door and drive away. Zipcar's in-car technology offers security in that only the member who has reserved a particular car can gain access and drive.

"Zipcar is another example of an innovative company that has deployed AT&T Wireless' national wireless data services to provide a greater customer experience and improve reliability," said Charlie Bolton, vice president of AT&T Wireless' corporate markets group. "We're pleased that Zipcar views our wireless data services as a significant element in its growth plans, and look forward to working with them as they expand their unique business model to other regions across the country."
