Damage from Hurricanes May Result in Thousands of Unsafe Cars Back on Road; Carfax Offers Free Vehicle Flood Check

FAIRFAX, Va.--Oct. 1, 20042, 2004--Carfax announced today that they would make free Carfax Flood Checks (www.carfax.com/flood) available to used car buyers and owners nationwide to assist them in avoiding flood-damaged wrecks.

"Our main goal is to help consumers understand that the problem exists and provide a way to avoid it," says Larry Gamache, communications director of Carfax. "The free Flood Check is the first step they can take to protect themselves."

In 1999, over half of the estimated 75,000 flood-damaged vehicles from Hurricane Floyd ended up back on the road. Although damaged vehicles from this year's hurricanes may take a while to hit the market, flooded cars from past storms currently exist. Carfax recommends that anyone buying a used car get a complete vehicle history report and a thorough inspection from a reliable, trustworthy mechanic before purchase.
