Toyota Announces Best-Ever Third Quarter and September Sales

TORRANCE, Calif., Oct. 1, 2004 -- Toyota Motor Sales (TMS), U.S.A., Inc., today reported best-ever September sales of 161,793, an increase of 10.3 percent over last September, and record third quarter sales of 542,393. Calendar-year-to-date (CYTD) sales stand at 1,547,029, up 8.9 percent over the same period last year.

"The arrival of new model-year products and a strong Labor Day weekend boosted September sales," said Jim Press, TMS executive vice president and COO. "Despite continuing fluctuations in oil prices and destructive weather in the Southeast, the industry held tight."

The Toyota Division posted record September sales of 141,606, up 11.6 percent. The Lexus Division reported best-ever September sales with 20,187 units sold, an increase of 2.3 percent over the same period last year.

Toyota Division passenger cars enjoyed best-ever September sales with 78,738 units sold, up 14.5 compared to the same period last year. The Corolla posted a best-ever September with 26,246 units sold, up 3.6 percent. The Prius gas-electric hybrid mid-size sedan reported best-ever September sales of 4,309. September also marked the first month that Prius broke the 100,000 sales mark since it first went on sale in the U.S. in the summer of 2000. Camry continues to be the best-selling passenger car in America with 34,628 units sold, bringing the CYTD sales total to 325,324 units.

Scion reported its best-ever September with 10,376 units sold. The all-new tC sports coupe led Scion sales with 4,241 units in its third month of sales. The xB urban utility vehicle and xA subcompact both posted best-ever September sales of 3,952 and 2,183 units, respectively.

Toyota Division light trucks recorded best-ever September sales of 62,868, up 8.2 percent. The Sienna van recorded best-ever September sales of 11,697, up 145.3 percent. Sales of the 4Runner mid-size sport utility vehicle (SUV) were up 14.9 percent with 9,348 units sold. Land Cruiser reported sales of 614 units, up 17.7 percent. The Tundra full-size pickup posted September sales of 8,973 units, up 5.5 percent.

The Lexus Division continues to be the luxury brand sales leader with CYTD sales of 208,879 units, up 11.8 percent. Lexus light trucks reported best-ever September sales of 10,878, up 10.2 percent. Sales of the RX 330 luxury SUV increased 6.9 percent, with 7,525 units delivered, for a best-ever September. The GX 470 mid-size luxury SUV also enjoyed a best-ever September with sales of 2,585, up 27.7 percent. LS 430 flagship luxury sedan sales were up 35.1 percent, at 2,448 units sold.

Sales of North American-built vehicles accounted for 62.7 percent of total September sales. There were 25 selling days this sales month compared to 24 last September.
