ARCA RE/MAX starting grid, Talladega

FRANK KIMMEL WINS POLE AT TALLADEGA
 

TALLADEGA AL (9-30-04)  Not Hendrick Motorsports, not Ganassi Racing, nor the best of the best in the ARCA RE/MAX Series could keep six-time series champion Frank Kimmel from winning the Pork Pole Award Thursday afternoon at Talladega Superspeedway for Saturday's Food World 300. 

 

Kimmel, with a speed of 185.043 mph, earned his 18th career superspeedway pole tying the Clarksville, Indiana driver with Tim Steele as ARCA's all-time superspeedway pole winners. In addition, the mark raised Kimmel's overall pole count to 38. It was, however, his first-ever pole at Talladega.

 

"We picked up a bunch in our speedway program since Daytona," said Kimmel. "Ira Small's been working super hard on the bodies, and Joe Rhyne has been working just as hard on our plate motor program trying to make more horsepower. We picked up from practice earlier today - made some cross weight and track bar adjustments. And we were able to make our run completely taped off, which really helped. This is definitely one of the highlights of my career. We've never won a pole at Talladega; this is really big for the Advance Auto Parts-Pork Ford team."

 

Kimmel, who is second on the all-time series win list with 56 victories, has never won at Talladega. His best finish here was second in 1999.

 

Rookie Blake Feese, in the Carquest Chevrolet, qualified second with a speed of 184.751 mph in a Hendrick Motorsports entry.

 

RE/MAX Series veteran Bobby Gerhart, in the Lucas Oil Chevrolet, was third overall at 184.655. Billy Venturini, in the Central Merchant Services Chevrolet, was fourth at 184.569 ahead of Ganassi Racing development driver Reed Sorenson, who qualified fifth at 184.523 in the Target Dodge.

 

Kim Crosby's and Mike Harmon's times were disallowed for failing to meet a minimum rear quarter panel height. In addition, Ken Weaver's time was disallowed for unapproved restrictor plate spacers.
