German-American Auto Maker DaimlerChrysler AG Says It Will Invest $210M in Northern Mexico Plant

MEXICO CITY September 30, 2004; The AP reported that German-American auto maker DaimlerChrysler AG said Thursday it will invest $210 million to update an assembly plant in the northern Mexican state of Coahuila.

The carmaker said new robotic equipment should speed up assembly and make production more agile. The company will also invest in new equipment for painting and final assembly.

DaimlerChrylser AG is the second biggest carmaker in Mexico, producing 178,508 vehicles in the first half of 2004 and exporting almost all of them to other markets.

In addition to the assembly plant, DaimlerChrysler has a factory producing motors in Saltillo, another assembling trucks and a third for stamping.

The company also has two plants in the central Mexican city of Toluca, and corporate offices in Mexico City. In all, the carmaker employs over 7,000 people in Mexico.
