Drivers Start Your Engines ... and Prepare as the Old Spice #11 Race Car Debuts in the NASCAR Nextel Cup
Ricky Craven Behind the Wheel of the First-Ever Old Spice Nextel Cup Stock Car After J.J. Yeley Does Not Receive NASCAR Approval for Talladega
CINCINNATI, Sept. 29 -- Old Spice, the leading male antiperspirant/deodorant brand in the category and the No. 1 choice for men, announces its latest endeavor in the adrenaline-charged world of NASCAR. In addition to sponsoring Joe Gibbs Racing driver Tony Stewart for the past five seasons, the brand is set to debut it's first-ever Old Spice Nextel Cup stock car. The #11 Old Spice Chevrolet Monte Carlo, with Ricky Craven behind the wheel, will make its Nextel Cup debut in the EA Sports 500 at Talladega Superspeedway on Oct. 3, 2004 (NBC, 2:30 p.m.).
"Old Spice is very excited to see its brand logo on the hood of a Cup car at one of the fastest and most exciting tracks in the U.S.," said Carl Stealey, Old Spice brand manager. "As a leader in men's grooming products, we're thrilled to have the opportunity to align ourselves with proven winners Joe Gibbs Racing and Ricky Craven."
USAC Triple Crown winner J.J. Yeley was originally slated to drive the #11 Old Spice Chevrolet at the Talladega Superspeedway, but was not approved by NASCAR to run at this size track and was replaced with Craven.
"I'll be rooting for the #11 Old Spice car this weekend," said Yeley. "I was looking forward to making the car's debut but understand the decision and will continue to support the Old Spice team in any way I can."
NASCAR veteran Ricky Craven, who drove the Tide car for three years, will now handle driving responsibilities for the #11 Old Spice Chevrolet. Last year, Craven won the Carolina Dodge Dealers 400 at Darlington Raceway in one of the closest finishes in Cup Series history when he beat Kurt Busch by .002 seconds, which officials tagged the closest finish in NASCAR since electronic scoring came into use in 1993. Prior to that, Craven scored an extremely popular first victory at Martinsville Speedway in October 2001, swapping paint with 1999 NASCAR champion Dale Jarrett on the last lap.
"I am excited that Old Spice, another Procter & Gamble brand, and Joe Gibbs Racing are giving me a shot at winning Talladega with a great team around me," said Craven. "I'm looking forward to driving alongside JGR teammates Tony Stewart and Bobby Labonte because teamwork and drafting at Talladega is so crucial."
