SAE Launches Inaugural Series of Training Seminars at the DTI-SAE Global Knowledge Center, Beijing

BEIJING, Sept. 27 -- Forty-four Chinese engineers, technicians and engineering managers participated in the first SAE Professional Development Seminars offered in China. Four seminars, taught by two experienced SAE Instructors, were offered during the week of August 30 through September 3, 2004 using classroom and laboratory facilities at Beijing's Tsinghua University.

The attendees who completed the training represented 18 different multinational and domestic Chinese corporations and came from 17 different cities in China, some traveling as much as 800 kilometers to attend the five- day training experience. Multinational companies represented included: Delphi China Corporation; Nissan Motor Co. Ltd.; Cummins Corporation Beijing Branch; GM Shanghai; John Deere Julian Harvester, Eagle Picher Automotive, Asimco Technologies, Nanjing Autoliv Ltd.; and Beijing Monroe Shock Absorber Company.

Domestic Chinese companies represented included: DongFeng Motor Corporation; Shanghai Automotive Industry Corporation; Jiangling Motor Company Ltd.; Dandong Huanghai Automotive Co. Ltd.; Beijing Foton Environmental Engine Co.; Shenyang Brilliance Jinbei Automobile Co.; and China Jialing Industrial Company Group, Ltd.

In addition, faculty members and instructors from Tsinghua University's Automotive Engineering Department; the Pan Asia Technical Automotive Center (PATAC) and the Shanghai Automotive Industry Training Center (SAITC) successfully completed the seminars.

Dr. William Mark McVea, an SAE Seminar instructor for almost 10 years, taught two seminars: Gear System Design, Analysis, and Application (I.D.#C0223) and Technical Survey of Modern Vehicle Transmission Systems (I.D.#99018). Dr. McVea's seminars used a Transmission and Gear Parts Kit featuring cutaway automatic, manual and CV transmissions as well as disassembled parts and components. This kit was specially prepared for instructional use by KBE+ Engineering.

Automotive Engineering Project Management (I.D.#99003) and Design for Manufacture and Assembly (DFM/DFA) (I.D.#C0418) were taught by Angelo E. Mago. Twenty participants enrolled in the project management seminar. Mr. Mago has taught SAE Seminars since 1998.

SAE's China Business Initiative, approved by the Board of Directors in January, 2004 as part of the SAE's Global Development Plan, calls for the implementation of additional engineering education and training in China. In 2005, four similar week-long seminar series will be offered in Shanghai and Beijing. Long term, the Initiative calls for the implementation of a full range of SAE training and engineering education opportunities to be delivered in both English and Chinese languages. In addition to the seminars, SAE has agreed to cooperatively develop a Symposium on Electronic Powertrain Controls and On Board Diagnostics with SAE China. The Symposium will be offered next April in conjunction with the Shanghai Auto Show.

The DTI-SAE Global Knowledge Center is a joint venture of SAE International and its Delphi-Tsinghua Institute partners, Delphi China and Tsinghua University. The Global Knowledge Center, in addition to serving as a host facility for the SAE Professional Development Seminars, also provides a library of SAE Publications and technical materials to China's engineering community.

SAE is a non-profit engineering and scientific organization dedicated to the advancement of mobility technology to better serve humanity. Nearly 84,000 engineers and scientists who are SAE members develop technical information on all forms of self-propelled vehicles, including automobiles, aircraft, aerospace craft, trucks, buses, marine, rail and transit machinery. This information is disseminated through SAE meetings, books, electronic products and databases, technical papers, standards, reports, and professional development programs.
