GOEWEY CAPS '04 WITH $1,000 WIN, WHITEHEAD A MODIFIED MAIDEN?
September 25, 2004
West Lebanon, NY-The sportsman division took center stage at Lebanon Valley Speedway for the final program of the 2004 season. K.C. Goewey put an exclamation point on his championship-winning season by winning the 30-lap race. The extra distance affair paid a special $1,000. The modified division was also on hand for the modified maiden race. This 20-lap feature was only for drivers that had competed at Lebanon Valley in 2004, but did not win a feature. Chris Whitehead dominated the event to take home his first career win at the Valley. In other racing action Rick Dempsey won the rookie pro stock feature. Ronnie Jacobsen will be the 2004 rookie pro stock champion. Dave Striebel, Eric Sbrega, Pete Wiegand and Steve Hatch won the four pure stock features. The 2004 champion in the pure stock division for the second straight year is Pete DeFiglio. The four-cylinder enduro was taking to the track when the rains came for one final time in 2004. That race will be made up the first night of racing in 2005. A special thanks to Speeds Garage, DMC Racing Products and CARQUEST for sponsoring this final night of action.
A pair of Hoffmans' led the sportsman feature to the green flag. Kyle Hoffman led the race at the completion of lap one. Unlike the modified feature only two caution flags flew in this event. Lorne Browe held the runner-up spot early with Art Collins in third. On a lap five restart Jeff Watson shot from fourth to second. K.C. Goewey started 16th in the race but was up to fifth on lap ten. With no cautions Hoffman was able to open a sizable advantage over Watson. Browe would regain the runner-up spot just before halfway.
With no caution periods to slow the event the leaders started to close in on lapped traffic. This proved to be costly for Hoffman. He got tangled up with a slowing lapped car, which allowed Browe, Goewey and Collins to get by. Hoffman did recover nicely to still finish fourth. Goewey moved his Team Goewey KIA into first on lap 26 and put his car in victory lane capping off a tremendous 2004 season. Browe, Collins, Hoffman and Watson rounded out the top five.
Six cautions before the halfway point of the modified feature played a big role in the outcome of the feature. Only eight of the fifteen starters finished the feature. Chris Whitehead at the start and never had any serious challenges for the lead. Whitehead had some late season problems and regrouped for this event. He was happy to make the long haul from Sussex, NJ to sit in victory lane. Paul Gilardi finished second and Steve Hough was third. Wes Powell was behind the wheel of the K&F Modular Homes #35 of Wayne Jelley and finished fourth. Stanley Wetmore was fifth.
That will conclude the racing action at Lebanon Valley Speedway for the 2004 season. A special thanks goes out to everyone who made this season possible. It could not be done without all the dedicated fans, drivers, crews and officials who support the speedway every week. The last event on the 2004 calendar is the 22nd annual swap meet on Sunday November 7th. Call the speedway at (518) 794-9606 or (518) 794-9965 for more information.
