Quaker State Racing Looks for Quick Conditions This Weekend
ENNIS, Texas (Sept. 24, 2004) Tony Pedregon placed the Quaker State Racing
Monte Carlo Nitro Funny Car into the second slot, setting up a competitive
second day of qualifying for this weekendıs OıReilly Auto Parts NHRA Fall
Nationals at the Texas Motorplex.
Pedregon clicked off a 4.810-second elapsed time at 318.02 mph during
tonightıs second session. The cooler night air played to the California
residentıs strengths.
³Even our first run in the heat was a good run,² Pedregon stated. ³We
thought we made a great run, but we broke the tires loose just a little bit.
And we always want to take advantage of the night conditions and we were
able to execute tonight.
³Iıve always been partial to all the quicker tracks,² Pedregon added. ³This
track is, without a doubt, one of them. When we have cooler night
conditions, it really plays into this teamıs favor. If we have some sun
tomorrow, weıre going to focus on getting down the track in the heat. At
this stage, an extra amount of attention goes into getting the car
consistent. If we can do that, I think weıll be around for some of the late
action on Sunday.²
The Texas Motorplex always offers an interesting driving surface. Itıs 1320
feet of concrete makes for great traction, but narrower grooves. But
according to Pedregon, itıs not a pronounced this weekend.
³It doesnıt seem like itıs as bad as it used to be,² Pedregon said. ³I donıt
know if they have made any improvements to the track, but especially in the
first session, itıs a whole lot better than it has been. I think what that
tells us is the conditions are a lot better overall. We did have a little
more track temperature this afternoon at 115 degrees (Fahrenheit), but I
think weıre going to have some real competitive racing this weekend. Thatıs
great for the fans, but a little tougher on us. Iıve had a lot of success at
this Dallas track and I hope it continues.²
