Autosport Development Qualifying Report
GMAC/Trenton Forging #5 GTO Qualifies 20th at Road Atlanta
Braselton, Ga. – Sept. 23, 2004 Overcoming issues with a slipping
clutch, the GMAC/Trenton Forging #5 GTO qualified 20th for the round 9
SPEED World Challenge GT series at Road Atlanta. The event will run
Friday in conjunction with the American LeMans Series Petit LeMans 10
hour endurance race.
“The car is pretty good,” said driver, Stu Hayner. “There appears to be
two groups of 10 cars with not much time separating each 10. We’re
obviously in that second group, but I think we’ll be able to be pretty
competitive. It appears the recent SCCA Pro competition adjustments are
doing their job. While it didn’t help us any, it really seems to have
shaken up the field. We’re not used to seeing the Audis this far back
on the starting grid. The start should be pretty exciting having those
all-wheel drive cars in the middle of the pack.”
“We plan on making a few changes before tomorrows race to see if we can
get the handling a little better,” Hayner added. … “All-in-all though,
we’re going to have to play the cards we were dealt for the rest of the
year. We’ve taken the car just about as far as we can take it this
year. Hopefully, we can sit down with the Series and see what help we
can get to make the car more competitive. Our guys have worked real
hard to get it this far, but we’re just to that point where we need
some relief.”
“Like I said, though,” continued Hayner, “tomorrow should be a heck of
a race. Everyone is packed together pretty tight throughout the entire
field. I think you’ll see every position being contested. These guys
aren’t prone to yielding the right of way so you can be sure the
spectators will be getting their money’s worth on this one. I know
we’ll be doing everything we can to move to the front. We’ve got a lot
of our friends from GMAC Commercial Finance this weekend and while I
can’t promise them a win, I can promise them a hell of a show!”
In addition to the racing activity, Hayner is participating in a
benefit go-kart event to raise funds for Motorsports Ministries.
Trenton Forging will field two teams in the three-hour endurance event.
The team will also host 30 guests from GMAC for Friday’s feature event
the SPEED World Challenge GT race.
Sunday, following the Petit Le Mans race at Road Atlanta, Chili Pepper
Racing is hosting a motorcycle charity ride through northern
Georgia. Fans can ride alongside SCCA SPEED World Challenge drivers,
including SPEED Touring Car Champion Bill Auberlen, Five-Time Le Mans
winner Derek Bell, Five-Time SPEED World Challenge Champion Michael
Galati, multi-race winner Stu Hayner, Former Rookie of the Year Matt
Plumb, Defending SPEED GT Champion Randy Pobst, event organizer Jim
