Delphi Grundig Launches New Digital Tachograph

Innovative technology meets new EU standard

Delphi work with TachoControl

HANOVER, Germany, Sept. 21 -- Delphi Corp. will present its new Delphi Grundig digital tachograph for the first time at the International Auto Show (IAA) Commercial Vehicles 2004 in Hanover.

The digital tachograph is a central control unit which stores journey times, driving and resting times, as well as the speed and the end of a shift. Every driver needs a personalized ID card to operate the tachograph. If needed, the police can then examine the data by making a printout using a master card.

"We see digital tachography not only as a market for the future, but also as an opportunity to establish Delphi Grundig and its Transport & Traffic unit in the long term as a powerful and reliable partner for commercial vehicle manufacturers in Europe," said Udo Krauss, director mobile multimedia Europe at Delphi Grundig.

The digital tachograph will be available in Europe starting in 2005 to coincide with the official introduction date for the new European Union standard (EEC 3821/ 85 Annex 1B) that states all new heavy-goods vehicles above 3.5 tons in weight must have a digital tachograph. The change in the law is to prevent tampering with tachographs and to make monitoring of driving times and resting times more easy.

Delphi Grundig is working with Semmler GmbH TachoControl for sales and aftermarket activities involving the digital tachograph. TachoControl, an experienced manufacturer of measuring equipment, will authorize and train inspection centers and their staff, and equip workshops with the necessary measuring equipment for digital tachography.

"I am convinced that Delphi Grundig and TachoControl can have a strong impact on this market together. The expertise and focus of the two companies complement each other ideally," said Ralf Semmler, Managing Director of Semmler GmbH TachoControl.

TachoControl is a member of both the standardization committee for digital tachographs in Brussels and the German Transport Ministry's working party on implementing EU directive 1360/2002 Annex 1 B in the German Highway Code STVZO, Paragraph 57 b, and also participates in the ISO standardization committee.

In the future, Delphi Grundig will take on the growing requirements for logistical processes and telematic technologies. As a supplier of on-board units (or on-board operating systems) for the world's first satellite-based toll collection system, Delphi Grundig currently provides the professional hardware which sets the standards for its type. The development and integration of information and data processing systems for the entire vehicle, as well as the wireless connection of mobile terminal equipment and data media, will be a major focus for Delphi Grundig and its Transport & Traffic unit.

The Transport & Traffic section of Delphi Grundig will be present as part at the main Delphi stand in Hanover in Hall 17, Stand A06.
