Sunoco Ron Fellows Karting Championship presented by Toronto Star Wheels
completes third year with exciting finale
INNISFIL, ONTARIO The Sunoco Ron Fellows Karting Championship presented by
Toronto Star Wheels has completed its third season with the running of the
sixth and final round at Innisfil Indy this past weekend. "To see how far
this series has come is a credit to the karters in Ontario," ASN Canada's
Paul Cooke said after the event.
The series has a host of new class champions. Leading the group is
Newmarket's Mike Roth, who headed the headline Formula Senior class. Roth
had the pole, but a clipped curb at the start of the final, put his
championship in doubt until the final lap. "I bent a spindle on the first
lap and it just pulled all race long," Roth said. "It was the toughest race
I have ever run. I had to fight it for the entire difference." Roth hung
onto third place good enough for the championship behind Cale Meeks and
Cale Mead.
The driver of the day was no doubt Markham's Marco Di Leo. Di Leo put the
finishing touches on not one, but two class championships. Di Leo took
Rotax Max Senior and Canada Senior Light. "I had the best package to
compete with all year long. The Gold Kart team gave me great equipment from
the first race and that was a big help."
Other Senior class champions include, Woodstock's Corey Usher in World
Formula Senior, Sunoco Team Ultra 94 alumni driver, Uxbridge's Aaron de
Heus in Canada Senior Heavy who won two races, Canada Senior Heavy and
light, on the final weekend.
In the Junior ranks, Orillia's Taylor Holdaway sealed Canada Junior Light
with a clean sweep of the final round. Markham's Evan Hayden took top spot
in the hotly contested Rotax Max Junior class. These two joined Markham's
Daniel Morad in Formula Junior, Woodstock's Willliam Keatings in World
Formula Junior and Stouffville's Pearce Herder in Canada Junior Heavy, who
had already claimed class championships.
The Pratt & Miller Team Spirit Award, which awards teams that are judged to
exhibit the highest levels of teamwork in the areas of presentation,
preparation and results. The award this round went to the team of Kevin
Monteith and his mother Wendy, who does all the mechanical work for the
team. The team has won the last three World Formula Junior rounds
The GM Racing Winner's Circle Award, which goes to a driver judged to have
displayed outstanding competition skills and sportsmanship, was awarded to
Wasaga Beach's Cale Meeks, who put on a dominant display in the Formula
Senior finale.
The objective of the the Sunoco Ron Fellows Karting Championship Presented
by Toronto Star Wheels is to help foster a professional environment for
kart drivers; help create a positive attitude towards appearance, conduct
and discipline; help foster the employment of the best practices for the
safe and fair running of competitions; and help kart drivers to move up the
racing ladder to automobile racing.
