NOTES OF INTEREST: This year's version of the Eddie Gilstrap Motors Fall Classic presented by Advance Auto Parts will mark the 73rd appearance of the ARCA RE/MAX Series at Salem Speedway since 1955. And, for only the second time, the event will go off under the lights on a Saturday night rather than the standard Sunday afternoon show. Area favorite Frank Kimmel, who lives 20 minutes away from the track, will clinch a record-tying 6th series championship by virtue of simply showing up to compete. Kimmel has won 8 of the last 13 events at Salem defeated only by Bill Baird, Ken Schrader, Tracy Leslie and Shelby Howard. While Kimmel has the overall title virtually wrapped up, several positions in the top-10 are still up for grabs. While Billy Venturini trails runner-up points driver Brent Sherman by 120 points, rookie TJ Bell trails third place Venturini by just 35 markers headed into Salem. Jason Jarrett, who has 4 runner-up finishes at Salem since 2001, finds himself in tight points fight for 5th with Christi Passmore, who follows Jarrett in 6th by just 75 points. No female driver, in 52 years of continual series competition, has ever finished 5th in points or higher. Shawna Robinson's 6th place points finish in 2000 is still the highest finishing points position for a female driver. Further back, rookie AJ Fike is just 5 points away from veteran Mark Gibson for the 7th place points position. 12th place driver Mike Buckley and 11th place driver Darrell Basham are well within reach of Todd Bowsher in 9th and Norm Benning, who is currently holding down the 10th place points position. Over 40 drivers from 15 states will be competing for 34 starting positions in this year's Fall Classic. 27 RE/MAX Series races have been won from the pole at Salem. In addition to the RE/MAX Series, the ARCA Lincoln Welders Truck Series will also be competing at Salem on the same day. The Salem/Truck event will serve as the season finale for the traveling truckers as it concludes its 6th consecutive season. The event will also decide the 2004 champion as 2-time series champ and current point leader Chad Guinn leads rookie Brett Rowe by just 30 points. Saturday's pre-race festivities also feature an autograph session from 4:45-5:15pm just prior to the start of the 50-lap ARCA Truck race. Notable RE/MAX Series past winners at Salem include NASCAR Cup champion Bobby Allison, six-time ARCA national champ Iggy Katona, three-time series champ Jack Bowsher, '52 Indy 500 winner Troy Ruttman, USAC stock car veteran/champion Don White and Cup star Ken Schrader.
