Modine Supplies Engine Cooling Modules for New BMW 1 Series

RACINE, Wis.--Sept. 15, 2004--Modine Manufacturing Company , a worldwide leader in applied thermal management, announced today it is now producing engine cooling modules for the new BMW 1 Series, which will be launched simultaneously worldwide on Saturday, September 18. BMW expects the 1 Series to be a very successful model, with around 100,000 units sold in 2005, the first full year of production.

"We are excited to be part of the 1 Series and see this as an additional step forward in our long-standing partnership with BMW. We are now delivering cooling modules for the BMW 3 Series, X3 Sport Utility and Z4," said David Rayburn, Modine's President and Chief Executive Officer. "We look forward to finding other ways of serving BMW as well."

The BMW 1 Series cooling module will be assembled at Modine's newest plant in Wackersdorf, Germany. The 118,000 square foot (11,000 square meter) facility uses the "Just-in-Sequence" delivery process to supply working modules to all four of the BMW automotive plants in the area. The successful development phase for the BMW 1 Series was completed in June, 2004, and Modine is now ramping up production for the worldwide launch.

The engine cooling module includes a combination of the following Modine parts: a radiator and charge air cooler from Modine's Pliezhausen, Germany facility, an Integrated Parallel Flow (IPF) condenser from Modine's Berndorf, Austria facility, and a transmission oil cooler, including a thermostatic valve, from Modine's Uden, The Netherlands facility.

Klaus Feldmann, Group Vice President and Managing Director of Modine Europe, said, "We have been a BMW partner for nearly 25 years. Our companies continue to work well together, which is shown by the other BMW platforms for which we provide cooling solutions."

Modine's original Wackersdorf plant won the prestigious Global Excellence in Operations Award (GEO) from analysis complied by Moderne Industrie-mi-Verlag, a European publishing company, Produktion, a European newspaper, and AT Kearney, a worldwide consulting company, for the category "Excellent Integration of Customers and Suppliers." Modine won the GEO Award for production of the engine cooling module on the BMW 3 Series and was the first Modine plant worldwide to use "Just-in-Time," "Just-in-Sequence," a highly advanced lean production method. Modine then applied this process successfully at its U.S. plant in Toledo, Ohio. After the success of the original Wackersdorf facility, Modine built a larger replacement Wackersdorf facility, which opened in the fall of 2003.

Modine, with fiscal 2004 revenues of $1.2 billion, employs more than 8,500 people worldwide at 35 facilities, and specializes in thermal management components, bringing heating and cooling technology to diversified markets. Modine's products are used in light, medium, and heavy-duty vehicles, HVAC equipment, industrial equipment, refrigeration systems, fuel cells and electronics.
