Guinn Wins in Toledo ARCA Trucks

In Toledo ARCA Trucks, Guinn Wins in Last-Lap Pass

TOLEDO OH (9-10-04) Two-time ARCA Lincoln Welders Truck Series champion Chad Guinn pulled off a last-lap, last-corner pass on championship rival Brett Rowe Friday night at Toledo Speedway to win the thrilling Lincoln Welders 50.

It was Guinn's 23rd series victory in his 65th career attempt giving the Erie, Michigan native wins in more than one-third of his total starts.

Pork Pole award winner Rowe, with a 10-length advantage near the end of the race, was seemingly well on his way to victory lane before Guinn, who qualified second quickest, turned up the wick. Guinn, in his father Larry Guinn's BFI-M&M Heating & Cooling-Harwood Buick/Pontiac Chevy S-10, reeled in the leader just before the white flag was unfurled. As the leaders charged off turn two nose-to-tail, they came upon the soon-to-be lapped truck of Bill Withers. Rowe, still leading, went high for the pass while Guinn went low making it three-wide into turns three and four. When the dust settled, Withers and Rowe were left to control their trucks as they slid up the track while Guinn, in the preferred low groove, sped off under the checkered flag as the winner.

Rowe, in his own Front Rowe Racing Chevrolet, managed to gather up his loose truck in time to finish second. Rick Knowles, in the Thomson Automotive Chevrolet, finished third with hometown Toledo born-and-bred favorite John Kasmierski trailing in fourth in the Hahn's Collision-Top Notch Seamless Gutters Chevy. Mark Otting, the last truck on the lead lap, finished fifth in the Westfalia Surge-Posilac One Step-Uckele Nutrition Chevy.

Stan Maitlen, who started on the pole by inversion, led the first 5 laps before Brian Rowe took control. Rowe hung on for 16 circuits before his younger brother and eventual runner-up finisher Brett Rowe made the pass for the lead on lap 22. By the time Guinn had worked his way into second, Rowe had already built a comfortable advantage. And although Rowe would lead the most laps, 28 in all, it was Guinn who would procure the most important one just in time for the checkered flag to wave.

Maitlen, in his own Meredith Heating & Cooling-Trent's Auto Parts Chevy, finished a solid sixth, one lap down with Withers, in the Mannings USA-Hall Electronics Ford Ranger, trailing in seventh. Jeff Smith, who started 15th and finished eighth, earned the Ed & Company Hard Charger award for advancing the most positions. Craig Meyers, in the Classic Racing Coupes-Pit Stop Graphics Ford, finished ninth. Jeff Wichmann, in the MidwestMetals.com-Graphic Edge Ford, finished tenth.

In addition to his second place finish, Rowe picked up the Cloyes Gear Halfway Lap Leader award and the ARCA Highest Finishing Rookie honors. Even though Rowe finished behind Guinn, the Barboursville, West Virginia driver made more points on the day by leading the most laps and qualifying on the pole. This will bring the championship points battle right down to the season finale this Saturday, September 18 at Salem Speedway where the ARCA truckers will share the same-day racing card with the ARCA RE/MAX Series for a double-header on the historic, half-mile, high-banked southern Indiana oval.
