NOTES OF INTEREST: Fresh from a short-track classic at Toledo Speedway Friday night, Sept 3, the ARCA RE/MAX Series will line up on the DuQuoin State Fairgrounds mile-dirt in DuQuoin, Illinois the following Monday for the 52nd annual Southern Illinois 100 presented by Federated Car Care. At present, the entry list for this year's DuQuoin dirt classic has a touch of NASCAR flavor with an entry from Cup series veteran Ken Schrader, who has entered for the 4th consecutive season. Three of Schrader's 11 career RE/MAX Series victories have come on dirt (Hagerstown half-mile, Indianapolis mile & Springfield mile); however Schrader has never won at DuQuoin. In his last 3 DuQuoin attempts, Schrader finished 4th in '01, 3rd in '02 and 2nd in '03. 71-year-old Red Farmer, the oldest driver in the field, has filed an entry for DuQuoin in the Bass Pro Shops-Tracker Boats Chevrolet. It will represent Farmer's 42nd career RE/MAX Series start. Farmer finished 5th in late August of this year on the Springfield mile-dirt. 16-year-old Josh Allison, who sat outside pole at Springfield, is the youngest driver in the field. Illinois drivers AJ Fike and Justin Allgaier will attempt to add their names to the DuQuoin history books by competing in the Southern Illinois ARCA 100, the Ted Horn USAC Silver Crown 100 and the UMP Modified Oldani Memorial all in the same weekend. If either driver can make the finale for all 3 events, it will mark the first time in 33 years for any driver to race three different types of cars in three different races on Labor Day weekend at DuQuoin. The last driver to pull off the 3-race trick at DuQuoin was the late Larry "Boom Boom" Cannon in 1971. Fike, who already has experience at DuQuoin in a Silver Crown car, is currently locked in a tight battle for ARCA Rookie of the Year honors with Sparks NV driver TJ Bell. Bell, who has never even seen DuQuoin, has a slim 10-point lead headed to Toledo (Sept 3). 3 former ARCA RE/MAX Series champions are entered: Frank Kimmel, Bill Baird & Bobby Bowsher. Baird, coming out of retirement following a 2-year hiatus, out-dueled Kimmel in the closing laps of the race on the Springfield mile-dirt in August to snap Kimmel's 4-race win streak at Springfield. Springfield was supposed to serve as Baird's warm-up for DuQuoin. Sounds like he's already fairly well warmed up. William Thomas, son of 4-time ARCA RE/MAX Series DuQuoin winner Billy Thomas, will make his series debut at DuQuoin in the JW Miller Land & Timber-Vernell Trucking Pontiac. The Pork Pole Award at DuQuoin will be presented in memory/honor of the late Dean Roper, the all-time ARCA RE/MAX Series dirt winner since '74 with 9 victories at DuQuoin, Springfield and Terre Haute. Only 2 ARCA RE/MAX Series races at DuQuoin have been won from the pole (Bob Hill in '96 & Tony Stewart in 2003). Stewart has won the last 3 consecutive Pork Poles at DuQuoin. Past ARCA RE/MAX winners at DuQuoin include Dean Roper & Billy Thomas each with 4, Bob Hill, Bob Keselowski & Frank Kimmel each with 2, and tied with 1 each - Bob Brevak, Jeff Finley, David Goldsberry, Lee Raymond, Bob Schacht, Tony Stewart and Bob Strait.
