Kanaan Posts Third-Fastest Speed
In Team 7-Eleven Car During Practice at Nazareth Speedway
NAZARETH, Pa. (August 27, 2004) - Tony Kanaan recorded the third-fastest
speed of the day during IRL IndyCar® Series practice Friday at Nazareth Speedway, as
teams and drivers began preparation for Sunday afternoon's running of the Firestone
Indy 225.
Kanaan spent the majority of the day concentrating on finding a comfortable race
setup as he piloted the #11 Team 7-Eleven Honda/Dallara/Firestone to a best speed of
165.267 miles per hour (20.3670 seconds) during the second practice session, while
logging a total of 102 laps for the day.
Topping the speed chart was Helio Castroneves with a speed of 165.667 miles
per hour (20.3179 seconds), Vitor Meira at 165.301 miles per hour (20.3629 seconds)
and Kanaan. Sam Hornish Jr. (165.085 miles per hour, 20.3895 seconds) and Darren
Manning (164.747 miles per hour, 20.4313 seconds) were fourth and fifth, respectively.
Kanaan enters Sunday's event atop the IndyCar® Series point standings, leading
Indianapolis 500 winner Buddy Rice by 68 points (463-395).
Practice for Sunday's race continues early Saturday morning, followed by
qualifying at 11:30 a.m. (EDT).
Tony Kanaan, #11 Team 7-Eleven Dallara/Honda/Firestone:
"We were just trying to get the setup right on the Team 7-Eleven car. We were
working a lot on race stuff and not really worrying about qualifying a lot. We've proven
that that we can lead a lot of laps, but it seems that we've struggled towards the end of
a race a few times. Since with Milwaukee race I've been working with Dario a lot closer.
He seems to dominate the 1-mile ovals a lot more than anybody else on our team, so
we're really working together."
Eric Cowdin, Race Engineer, #11 Team 7-Eleven Dallara/Honda/Firestone:
"We were playing a little bit of the catch-up game because we didn't test here.
We had some very basic stuff that we needed to get through initially and find our way
based on the information we received from our teammates who did test here. We put it
all together and made Tony more comfortable with his race setup. We've got a pretty
good car, we just need to keep tuning on it and plan ahead for race day; that's going to
be when it counts."
