Global ET's Latest SIMSigma Solution on Display at Auto-Tech 2004
SIMSigma Enforces Quality Procedures
FARMINGTON HILLS, Mich., Aug. 25 -- Global ET, a software engineering and information integration firm, is unveiling its latest version of SIMSigma at Auto-Tech 2004 (booth #211 at Cobo Hall in Detroit from Aug. 31 to Sept. 2). Originally created five years ago, SIMSigma helps customers extract real value from their ISO, QS, TS, or internally-developed plant floor procedures, by enforcing them with electronic intelligence on the plant floor and automating the record keeping process.
SIMSigma is a turnkey electronic data collection and error proofing solution that enables manufacturers to measure, analyze, improve and control assembly and manufacturing processes on the plant floor. SIMSigma consists of several software modules. When these modules are integrated together, they form a complete production system that electronically interacts with the assembly and manufacturing process to ensure electronic compliance.
"SIMSigma allows our customers to manage in a quality-conscious environment and empowers employees to create and maintain an error-free manufacturing and assembly environment," said Dave Backus, co-founder, Global ET. "When employees focus on performing an operation instead of memorizing a procedure, errors are greatly reduced or eliminated. Data collection and error proofing are extremely important, especially in plants with a high level of complexity and volume."
The latest version of SIMSigma allows for line balancing reconfiguration, manifest number changes, traceable component changes and modifications to assembled modules. By incorporating graphical visual aids such as photographs, diagrams and drawings, the system is able to transcend language barriers.
"Pressure from Tier-1 suppliers and OEMs to have zero errors is enormous. We can help stop a problem that can be detected electronically before it is shipped to the customer," said Mark Stanczak, co-founder, Global ET. "We help customers by configuring and integrating SIMSigma with their manufacturing process to avoid tremendous cost and waste. Our system helps suppliers to manage by exception rather than manage by rule."
Each SIMSigma system follows the entire manufacturing process and is tailored to customer needs. A SIMSigma solution can be created for assembling one part or building complex modular assemblies. Past successes of SIMSigma include rear suspension module assembly, mid-gate module assembly, front suspension module assembly, transmission-transfer case assembly, and electric park brake modules.
Global ET has developed several ways to configure the SIMSigma solution, depending on processes and system requirements. SIMSigma integrates a variety of hardware and software, computers, flat panel displays, network switches and hubs, bar code scanners, torque controllers, pick detectors, stack lights, sirens and interlocking mechanisms.
Traceability is inherent to the system since it includes a bar coding system and other electronic data capturing devices. With SIMSigma, manufacturers can sort data by build history, VIN number, date built and sub- assembly line.
Companies using the SIMSigma solution should plan for two weeks to six months to work with Global ET, depending on the complexity of the system.
Cost savings resulting from using the SIMSigma system can be substantial. When SIMSigma prints a part barcode at the end of the sub-assembly line, the part supplier can be sure their module was manufactured or assembled correctly. In the event a subcomponent fails or a defect is found in the field, SIMSigma can readily identify the faulty component(s) by lot number, module identification number (serial number) and ultimately the vehicle's identity (VIN number). SIMSigma can provide this information within minutes, avoiding a potentially massive recall, and facilitating the quick removal of defective parts from inventory.
