Fleetguard Emission Solutions Helps Bartholomew Consolidated School Corporation ''Clear the Air''
NASHVILLE, Tenn.--Aug. 2, 20045, 2004--Company Donates, Installs Exhaust Aftertreatment Devices on Two BCSC School Buses |
Fleetguard Emission Solutions(TM) has donated and installed two diesel oxidation catalysts (DOCs) to reduce emissions on school buses operated by the Bartholomew Consolidated School Corporation in Columbus, Ind. Fleetguard is a wholly-owned business unit of Columbus-based Cummins Inc. .
The DOCs were installed today, with school and Cummins officials, along with U.S. Rep. Baron Hill, (D-9th District) in attendance.
The DOCs dramatically reduce particulate matter (PM) in the air, which has become a significant area of emphasis for the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency over the last several years. The EPA committed $10 million to the Clean School Bus USA project, and the BCSC initiative is Fleetguard's first donation as part of the program.
"Installation of the DOCs represents our active participation in the Clean School Bus USA initiative," said Amy Boerger, Retrofit Sales and Marketing Leader for Fleetguard Emission Solutions(TM). "A typical school bus emits 40 pounds of PM a year, so this is a significant opportunity to do something that helps clean the air and improve the environment for school children. There is no greater satisfaction for a company than to make a difference."
The Bartholomew Consolidated School Corporation has more than 100 buses powered by Cummins engines. District officials thanked the Company for the donation and installation of the DOCs.
"We were excited about the offer from Fleetguard Emission Solutions(TM) to retrofit these buses and the opportunity to receive hands-on training," said Monica Coburn, Transportation Manager of BCSC. "We hope this will be the beginning of a larger initiative in Bartholomew County."
The DOCs technology is relatively low-cost, is easy to retrofit on existing vehicles, requires no maintenance, and "we offer a variety of sizes and shapes to fit every application and engine make," Boerger said. "We were also able to demonstrate to the school district just how easy the DOC is to install."
The DOC mufflers are designed with a catalyst inside to be retrofitted into the space of the old muffler, and installation typically takes an hour or less. Cummins Mid-States Power, the local Cummins distributor, offered installation support to BCSC. While Cummins Mid-States has participated in numerous school bus retrofits in Illinois, this represents its first installation in Indiana.
Fleetguard Emission Solutions(TM) catalysts work by oxidizing pollutants in the air, including carbon monoxide (CO) and hydrocarbons (HC). For example, DOCs oxidize CO and HC to carbon dioxide and water, reducing CO and HC up to 50 percent. DOCs also reduce particulate matter by approximately 20 percent.
As part of its mission to protect people, equipment and the environment, Fleetguard created its Emission Solutions(TM) business several years ago to focus on meeting the growing requirements from customers and governmental regulatory agencies to reduce oxides of NOx and PM emissions from engine and power plant exhaust. Target customers include users of new and in-service diesel and spark-ignited engines requiring catalytic control devices, as well as original equipment manufacturers that require state-of-the-art exhaust aftertreatment technology.
Boerger said Fleetguard Emission Solutions(TM) takes a global approach to emission technology with emission reduction devices currently installed on both retrofit and first fit applications in the United States and Canada, Asia, South America and Europe. The Company has installed emission reduction devices on well over one million vehicles in a variety of applications.
