Volo Auto Museum to Sell RoboCop Car and Stunt Suit
VOLO, Ill., Aug. 25, 2004 -- The Volo Auto Museum will sell the only vehicle to survive the extraordinary stunts and special effects featured in the 1993 blockbuster RoboCop 3.
The museum announced the sale on Chicago's WGN Morning News on Wednesday, Aug. 25 and later that day listed the car and the actual robot costume from the legendary science-fiction film on eBay.
Part man, part machine, all cop! RoboCop first leapt from the comic-book pages to the big screen in 1987 and fast became one of the most popular crime- fighters in movie history. Thrilling, hilarious, and completely original, the first movie grossed over $50 million and spawned two successful sequels and a TV series.
RoboCop's squad car is a 1988 Ford Taurus painted flat black and outfitted with a prisoner cage, light bar, police-style radio, and an on-board computer. The car is packed with original movie props, including assault rifles, handguns, grenades, and a police baton.
RoboCop's ride and his molded-plastic costume have been on display at the world famous Volo Auto Museum since 2001. The sci-fi memorabilia is being sold to make room for the Starsky and Hutch car that the museum recently acquired from the George Barris Collection, Museum President Greg Grams said.
"We like for our guests to experience something new every time they visit the museum," Grams said.
A 30-acre theme park, the Volo Auto Museum is the proud home of the George Barris TV and Movie Car Collection, 300 collector and muscle cars, military artifacts, children's exhibits, a 1950s food court, five antique malls and lots of other cool attractions.
The Volo Auto Museum is open seven days a week from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. General admission is $7; $5 for seniors, veterans with Veterans Universal Access ID, and active personnel with military ID; $3 for children 6-12; and free for children under age 6 and military personnel in uniform. Special group rates are available. Visit http://www.volocars.com/ or call (815) 385-3644 for details.
The Volo Auto Museum is located about 50 miles north of Chicago, 50 miles east of Rockford and 50 miles southwest of Milwaukee, 1/2 mile west on Route 12 on Highway 120, 13 miles west of I-94 in Volo, Illinois. The museum reserves the right to postpone or cancel events.
