Cruz Pedregon Elimination Wrap Up

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (Aug. 22, 2004) ­ Cruz Pedregon and the Advance Auto Parts
Monte Carlo Nitro Funny Car wrapped up a humid, hot weekend of racing at
Memphis Motorsports Park.

Pedregon smoked the tires, falling to John Force in round number one. Force
drove to a 4.994-second elapsed time at 300.93 mph. Despite the
disappointment, Pedregon spoke of his first round go.

³You really have to put out your best effort when you go up against John
Force,² said Pedregon, who recorded a stellar .035 of a second reaction
time. ³I knew that I needed to do the best I could to help us get the win.
It worked because I had one of my best lights of the entire season.

³The car really hasnıt been hooking up all season,² Pedregon continued.
³This weekend, we have really had a lot of wheel speed in the first part of
the runs. During the first round, the track was definitely warmer that it
had been all weekend ­ something like 114 degrees or so. The car then slowly
went into tire smoke. At that point, John Force was out the window. I
actually got on and off the throttle, got back into it just in case Force
had a problem. It was over from there.²

Pedregon wrapped up his weekend.

³We had a pretty decent weekend qualifying,² Pedregon said. ³Weıre going to
look at it. We were just tripped up a little bit, but thatıs all. Weıre
definitely a better car and better team than we demonstrated this weekend.
For some reason, Memphis never has been one of my better race tracks. I
donıt know why, but itıs just one of the those races. Even when Iıve come
here on a roll, itıs been a challenge.²
