Thomson wins Mosport Speedway 200 and assumes CASCAR Super Series points lead

BOWMANVILLE, ON - Don Thomson Jr. ended a winless streak that dated back to
August 18, 2002 when he led all but one lap of Saturday night’s Mosport
Speedway 200 at the half-mile, Bowmanville-area speedway.
The win moved the Home Hardware Chevy driver to the top of the CASCAR
Super Series point standings with just three races remaining in his quest
for a record fourth National championship. Canadian Tire Chevy driver Peter
Gibbons had led the title hunt since winning the first race of the season,
at Delaware Speedway, but saw his lead margin evaporate following a
ninth-place result at Mosport.
The race started with Thomson on the pole for the fifth time in nine
events in 2004. And aside from a single lap led by Gibbons while Thomson
was in the pits, Thomson led the entire race. Although Thomson has been
very consistent while earning his three Super Series titles in the past
three seasons, he was often openly frustrated that he wasn’t winning races
during that time. His Mosport victory put an end to a two-year drought and
removed that monkey from his back.
Second-place went to NTN Dodge driver Mark Dilley, for the second time in
as many races. The Barrie, ON racer was runner-up to his teammate Dave
Whitlock three weeks ago in Calgary’s MOPAR 300. At Mosport on Saturday
night, Dilley came home almost a full second back of Thomson. The third and
final podium position went to Castrol Dodge driver DJ Kennington, who
continues to rebound from a difficult first half of the season.
Whitlock kept himself in the running for a fourth CASCAR Super Series
National championship with a fourth-place finish at Mosport. The Avenue /
NMT Dodge racer came home ahead of Jeff Lapcevich, who battled back after
starting 22nd.
The race was slowed by seven cautions for a total of 41 laps. Rookie
drivers J.R. Fitzpatrick and Pete Shepherd III were sixth and seventh,
respectively, and continue to challenge each other for the Rookie of the
Year honours. Heading to next weekend’s race at Peterborough Speedway,
Shepherd sits just 24 points ahead of Fitzpatrick in the rookie chase.
