NOTES OF INTEREST: 5-time ARCA RE/MAX Series champion and 4-time Springfield winner Frank Kimmel will be going after an unprecedented 5th consecutive win at the central-Illinois mile dirt in Springfield when the 42nd annual Allen Crowe Memorial 100 rolls off Sunday afternoon, August 22. Only 3 drivers: Kimmel, Bob Keselowski and Dean Roper have won 4 Crowe Memorials at Springfield. But, no driver has ever won 4 consecutive there, except Clarksville, Indiana's Kimmel. Kimmel's performance last year moved him to third on the all-time lap leader list at Springfield with 286, just nine behind Don White and 34 behind the legendary Dean Roper. Kimmel is shooting for his 8th overall dirt win on Sunday, a win-list that also includes DuQuoin and West Virginia Motor Speedway. The event marks the 55th dirt-track event for the ARCA RE/MAX Series since 1974 and 22nd at Springfield since 1983. However, the series dirt-track tenure goes back to its earliest origins in 1953 when 95% of the schedule was made up of dirt. The Allen Crowe Memorial 100 ARCA RE/MAX Series race is the largest sporting event in the state capital city of Springfield. Local Springfield driver Justin Allgaier, a recent 18-year-old high school grad, is slated to compete in both the Crowe 100 on Sunday as well as the Silver Crown open-wheel show the day before. The Pork Pole award will be presented in honor/memory of the late Dean Roper, ARCA's all-time winningest driver on dirt with 9 wins. Hueytown, Alabama stock car racing legend Red Farmer, 70-years-plus, is entered in a #97 ML Motorsports Chevrolet with sponsorship from Bass Pro Shops and Tracker Boats. Farmer finished 4th at DuQuoin in 2002. 1999 ARCA RE/MAX Series champion and '99 Springfield winner Bill Baird, who hasn't raced on the tour since 2002, is planning his return to competition at Springfield, which is to serve as a warm-up for DuQuoin. Third-generation racer Jason Jarrett will make his 4th consecutive attempt at Springfield. The battle for ARCA Rookie of the Year continues to be close with Sparks NV driver TJ Bell leading by a slim 12 points over Galesburg IL driver AJ Fike. Both rookies will be making their career-1st RE/MAX Series attempts on the Springfield mile-dirt, although Fike has competed at Springfield in a Silver Crown car. Brothers' Todd and Bobby Bowsher are entered. Bobby, a former Springfield winner, is also a two-time series driving champion. After 21 RE/MAX Series events at Springfield, 7 have been won from the pole - Bob Keselowski in 1987, Bob Brevak in 1990, Bob Hill in 1994, Ken Schrader in 1998 and defending race winner Frank Kimmel in 2001, 2002 and 2003. Past ARCA RE/MAX Series winners at Springfield include Frank Kimmel & Bob Keselowski 4, Dean Roper 3 (4 counting USAC Crowe Memorial win in '81), Bobby Bowsher and Tim Steele 2, and Bill Baird, Bob Brevak, Bob Hill, Bobby Jacks, Ken Schrader and Billy Thomas all with 1.
