Solomon Technologies Begins Trials of New Twenty Horsepower Motor
TARPON SPRINGS, Fla.--Aug. 1, 20047, 2004--Solomon Technologies, Inc. (OTCBB:SOLM) today announced that it has begun tank testing of its new 20 hp electric motor targeting larger marine and land based applications. The increased power and versatility of this new motor will allow the Company to expand its product line into 50' - 110' sailboats, commercial fishing fleets and other large vessels while simultaneously expanding the options for Solomon's land based applications.David Tether, the Company's founder, and Dr. Kevin Smith of Lord Technologies, Solomon's contract motor manufacturer, conducted the test at the Company's new Florida facility in a 2,000-gallon steel test tank. The tank, built for Solomon's smaller, first-generation motors, couldn't handle the 20 hp. motor at full speed. "You could see the sides of the tank flexing in and out because of the turbulence created by this motor; I was surprised how powerful it was." said Dr. Smith. "It was a real worst-case scenario - similar to motoring through a hurricane. I am anxious to see its performance under actual sea conditions." he added. David Tether also noted that "These tests were intentionally setup to push the limits of the motor and we were very pleased that the motor performed flawlessly. It ran cool throughout the test without showing any signs of overheating under some pretty rough conditions."
During the most recent bench tests the 20 hp motor, which is comparable to a 55-65hp diesel motor, attained peak torque readings of 160 lb-ft at 863 rpm while drawing just over 90 amps of current. Although the 160 lb-ft maximum is very impressive, "We're just going to have to wait for some further in-water, real-world data, before we can come up with a final continuous rating," added David Tether.
The motor has tentatively been assigned a continuous duty torque rating of 123 lb-ft, although the Company anticipates that it will probably end up higher. For comparison, Solomon's current production 12 hp motor, which is comparable to a 36-42 hp diesel motor, produces 74 lb-ft of torque.
David Tether commented, "These tests continue to emphasize the fundamental advantages of Solomon's electric motor technology over traditional diesel engines for both marine and land based applications."
