Gentilozzi Ties Trans-Am Record With Win
DENVER August 14, 2004; The AP reported that Paul Gentilozzi tied the Trans-Am record for career victories when he earned his 29th Saturday night at the Grand Prix of Denver.
Gentilozzi, who tied the record set by Mark Donohue in 1971, led 60 of 61 laps in a Jaguar XKR to earn the victory in his 196th start.
"Mark Donohue was a great race driver," Gentilozzi said. "He won more races in more different cars than anyone. He won 29 Trans-Am races in 55 starts. This is an amazing record, but it's almost 30 years later and things have changed in Trans-Am. I have a lot of respect for what Mark accomplished and I'm honored with the record."
The win also clinched the manufacturers' title for Jaguar, its second consecutive championship and fourth overall.
Johnny Miller finished second in a Chevrolet Corvette in just his second start this season, ahead of the Jaguars driven by Tommy Kendall and Greg Pickett.
Gentilozzi extended his lead in the points race to 11.
