Delphi Showcases Technology Breakthroughs at the Mondial de l'Automobile Show '04

Innovative power sliding door by Delphi fitted on the Peugeot 1007

Active safety, diesel and entertainment technologies featured

PARIS, Aug. 12 -- History will be made at the 2004 Mondial de l'Automobile when Delphi Corp. presents the world's first power sliding door application for a city car.

The new Peugeot 1007 will be equipped with two motorized power sliding doors by Delphi. Power sliding doors have been featured on MPVs (multi- purpose vehicles) in the United States since 1994, and in Europe since 2002, but the Peugeot 1007 will be the first time anywhere the technology has been featured on a city car.

The power sliding door is one of several technology breakthroughs that Delphi will be featuring at the Mondial show (Hall 1 Stand A251), beginning Sept. 23. Some technology highlights include:

DELPHI DIESEL PRODUCTS & SERVICES OVERVIEW

Delphi anticipates making news announcements on its diesel business. Delphi continues to be among the leaders in product and service offerings for the Diesel market with its current Multec diesel common rail system achieving current Euro IV emissions standards and paving the way to meeting future emissions standards, Euro-V emission regulations in 2008.

DELPHI WORKS TO MEET ALTERNATIVE REFRIGERANT NEEDS FOR A/C SYSTEMS

Delphi is taking a leading industry role in developing alternative refrigerant options for future air conditioning systems. Delphi will have subject matter experts available to talk about how the company is working to provide the best options for its customers and for the environment. Although automotive air conditioning accounts for less than 5 percent of total vehicle global warming potential and the current refrigerant, R134a, contributes less than 0.4 percent of total global warming gas emissions in Europe, worldwide concern over the impact of hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs) such as R134a caused the industry to search for alternative refrigerants.

DELPHI IS ON ITS WAY TO PROVIDING ADVANCED ACTIVE STEERING TECHNOLOGIES

Delphi is on its way to providing advanced active steering technologies to enhance occupant safety, vehicle stability and vehicle dynamics, beginning with Delphi Electric Power Steering. Now featured on seven models including the Fiat Panda (the 2004 European Car of the Year), Delphi Electric Power Steering currently offers advanced tunable features such as active return-to- center, variable effort steering and active damping for improved vehicle stability and safety that is optimized for each vehicle application. The system is coupled with Delphi's industry leading energy absorbing steering column technology for added driver safety.

Delphi is developing its controls capability to provide additional active safety benefits by using incremental torque control to overlay the base power steering assist. This technique of overlaid steering torque control provides opportunities to compensate for vehicle behaviors such as road pull, side wind gusts, and stability control. The technology gives driver feedback for lane departure warning, and provides more pronounced assistance such as parking assist.

A further step in providing active steering control is Delphi Active Front Steering, where a mechanism is introduced to actively vary the steering ratio. Actively managing the steering ratio enables quick steering to greatly reduce driver workload at slow speeds and slower steering to provide increased stability at high speeds without overall vehicle compromises. Full lock-to- lock turns can be accomplished during parking maneuvers in as little as two thirds of a turn of the steering wheel for simplified city driving, while smooth transitions from a low-speed to a high-speed steering ratio provides for a tighter, sportier feel for driving enjoyment and better control on the highway. Active steering control also enables the system to provide additional dimensions of control during situations of vehicle instability.

DELPHI MAXIMUM TORQUE BRAKE REPRESENTS THE FIRST SUBSTANTIAL DEVELOPMENT IN BASE BRAKING TECHNOLOGY FOR 50 YEARS

Delphi will be featuring its newest braking technology at Mondial. Delphi Maximum Torque Brake is a highly specific torque brake corner with fixed brake caliper, twin floating disc rotors and hydraulics integrated into the steering knuckle. Maximum Torque Brake uses two discs floating on the outside diameter of the hub. A hydraulically actuated piston applies braking force via pads that operate on the outside and inside faces of each disc, providing four friction surfaces. Excellent thermal management provides opportunities to enhance a wide range of system parameters including pedal feel, fluid displacement, booster size and rotor diameter.

DELPHI OFFERS A COMPLETE RANGE OF ENTERTAINMENT AND INFOTAINMENT TECHNOLOGIES FOR TOMORROW'S CARS

A leader in wireless and mobile multimedia technologies, Delphi offers a complete range of "end-to-end solutions" for vehicle entertainment and communications. For more than 68 years Delphi Electronics & Safety Division has provided wireless products for vehicles. Delphi provides audio, satellite radios, Bluetooth radio, navigation systems, telematics, rear seat entertainment, mobile TV reception and antennas for customers around the world. Delphi is currently working with suppliers to provide wireless 802.11 connections and satellite TV to vehicles.

With more experience in providing mobile entertainment than any other manufacturer, Delphi has produced more than 255 million audio units since putting the first in-dash receiver in an instrument panel in 1936. In addition, the company has produced a long number of firsts in wireless.

MAGNERIDE(TM) SEMI-ACTIVE SUSPENSION BEGINS TO CHANGE THE WAY EUROPEAN CAR MANUFACTURERS THINK ABOUT VEHICLE COMFORT, SAFETY, RIDE DYNAMICS AND CONTROL

Delphi anticipates making a news announcement concerning MagneRide(TM). MagneRide is the industry's first semi-active suspension technology that has no electro-mechanical valves and no small moving parts. The MagneRide magneto-rheological (MR) fluid-based semi-active suspension system consists of MR fluid-based monotube struts and/or monotube shock absorbers, a sensor set, and on-board controller. MagneRide helps provide increased handling performance, safety, comfort, and reliability. First introduced on the 2002 Cadillac Seville STS, MagneRide is also on the Chevrolet Corvette and brings these benefits to performance and luxury vehicles alike. Several European car manufacturers are today looking at introducing this revolutionary technology on their vehicles.

DELPHI DRIVES GAINS IN SAFETY PERFORMANCE

Delphi subject matter experts will discuss the emerging market demand for active safety in vehicles. Consumers are not only demanding greater safety and security in their vehicles; they are prepared to pay for it. Delphi is building systems that help drivers avoid accidents, as well as technologies that help minimize the effect of collisions. Delphi is a leading global safety system supplier and has been engineering products that help mitigate injuries since 1966. Delphi's suite of passive safety products includes driver, passenger, side, curtain, and knee airbags as well as seatbelt systems and steering wheels.

Delphi's Situationally Tailored Adaptive Restraint passenger airbag is a breakthrough safety technology that improves protection for occupants of all sizes and different crash severities. The adaptive system controls the size of the airbag by evaluating the size of the occupant, sitting position of the occupant, seatbelt usage, crash severity, and crash direction. Delphi will be in serial production with this new technology with a major OEM by model year 2006. Delphi's curtain airbags provide head and neck protection during side impact collisions and rollovers. These airbags are designed to deploy from the vehicle roof rail or door. They deliver an extended inflation pressure to allow for protection in the event of a multiple impact situation.

Delphi's eminent history in seatbelts allows it to offer advanced technologies that OEMs need to meet vehicle programs while providing performance and reliability. Delphi was the first to invent a steering wheel with an integrated airbag. Delphi's steering wheel portfolio includes a wide range of innovative technologies such as low-mass, die-cast magnesium insert designs to leather wrapped or natural wood steering wheels. These systems help satisfy the demands of consumers, government legislation, and OEMs. Also, they have dramatically lowered the seriousness of injuries in car crashes. Having covered the bases for passive safety, Delphi is rapidly moving to put active safety systems onto vehicles. Delphi has developed an innovative family of radar, laser and ultrasound sensing systems such as adaptive cruise control, blind spot warnings and lane departure warning systems.
