RINGERS GLOVES WEEKEND WRAP-UP
Brickyard 400 Weekend
Indianapolis – (August 9, 2004) The drivers of the NASCAR Craftsman Truck
Series, Busch Series and Nextel Cup Series made their annual visit to the
racing capital of the world (Indianapolis) over the weekend.
The Craftsman Truck Series and Busch Series drivers took to the .686-mile
oval at Indianapolis Raceway Park on Friday and Saturday for Kroger Speedfest,
while the Nextel Cup racers visited the famed 2.5-mile Indianapolis Motor
Speedway for the 11th annual Brickyard 400.
On Friday, the Ringers teams of Orleans Racing and SS Racing (regularly an
ASA team) competed in the Power Stroke Diesel 200 for the second night of
Kroger Speedfest.
Both teams advanced three positions better than their starting ones to
finish out the race. The Orleans Racing team started 25th and finished 22nd,
while Butch Miller and the SS Racing/TimberWolf Chevrolet made their first Truck
Series start of the year in 27th and finished 24th.
Saturday night wrapped up the festivities of Kroger Speedfest with the
Kroger 250 and the stars of the NASCAR Busch Series.
Reed Sorenson, another ASA National Tour regular, made his Busch Series
debut for Chip Ganassi Racing. Sorenson qualified in the third spot and was able
to bring home his first top-15 finish of his Busch Series career, finishing
in 13th.
The #87 and #88 teams of NEMCO Motorsports finished 33rd and 39th,
respectively.
On Sunday, the drivers of Penske Racing South competed in the 11th annual
Brickyard 400, but only one of the drivers crossed the yard of bricks a lap
161.
On lap 95, Brendan Gaughan was involved in an accident that ended his day
earlier than expected. Gaughan was scored 35th in the end.
Ryan Newman had a top-10 qualifying effort in seventh, but also didn’t have
the day he planned on.
On lap 154, Newman and rookie Brian Vickers got together that ended Newman’s
day six laps early. He was scored in the 31st position.
Rusty Wallace was the only Penske Racing South driver to drive his car to
the finish.
Early on, Wallace suffered minor damage from an eight-car wreck involving
Scott Riggs.
Wallace finished 13th.
The Nextel Cup Series and the Penske Racing South drivers head to Watkins
Glen this weekend.
