ARCA Rookie Trucker Brett Rowe Wins Wild One at Lake Erie
NORTH EAST PA (8-6-04) ARCA Lincoln Welders Truck Series rookie Brett Rowe battled back from a mid-race collision and then capitalized on the misfortunes of an older brother to win the wild ARCA Lincoln Welders 100 presented by USG Friday night at Lake Erie Speedway.
Rowe, who had charged back from the tail-end of the lead-lap trucks, found himself following his brother Brian Rowe for the final restart just four laps from the finish when Brian suddenly pulled off the speedway with mechanical troubles leaving the eventual winner clear sailing ahead. From there, Rowe pulled away from Tully Esterline in the final laps to earn his second series victory in only his sixth attempt.
"Just want to thank everyone that helps on this," said Rowe from victory lane. "This Front Rowe Racing Chevy just ran flawlessly tonight. I'm not sure what happened there on the backstretch. Chad (Guinn) and I were racing for the lead when we touched. It was certainly nothing intentional on my part. Chad's a great racer. We were fighting hard when it happened."
Brett Rowe, who had been chasing Guinn for the lead inches away lap after lap, finally maneuvered under the leader on lap 61 of the 100-lap race when the two lead trucks locked horns headed down the backstretch. Both machines spun but were able to keep going. And both would charge back and race for the win soon after.
Esterline, in the Rupp Seeds Chevy S-10, held off Guinn to finish second. Esterline, who is a shock engineer for David Green's NASCAR Busch Series team, commuted from Indianapolis Raceway Park to compete in the event. Guinn finished third with his partially mangled-up truck in the BFI-M&M Heating & Cooling-Harwood Buick/Pontiac Chevy. Brian Nester, subbing for series regular Tim Burkett, finished fourth in his career-first series start. Mark Otting finished fifth in the Westfalia Surge-Posilac One Step-Uckele Nutrition Chevy.
Outside polesitter Dave Reeb led the first two laps before Guinn, who started fourth after the inversion, took over the top-spot with the eventual winner in tow. Rowe worked Guinn over lap after lap before he was able to make his move for the lead. After Guinn and Rowe were put to the tail-end following their altercation, rookie Rick Knowles led with Brian Rowe in second for the restart. Brian Rowe immediately worked underneath Knowles as the leaders took the green flag for the restart.
From there, Knowles, with Brett Rowe and Esterline in tow, worked the new leader over continually before he too got tangled with the leader headed into turn one. In the ensuing scrape, Knowles spun while Brian Rowe continued on. That set the stage for the final four-lap shootout that led to the dramatic conclusion.
Knowles, in the Thomson Automotive Chevy, fought back to finish sixth, the last truck on the lead-lap. Brian Rowe, three laps down, was scored in seventh in the Livernois Motorsports-Pate Manufacturing Chevy. Brad Yunker, who finished eighth in the Champion Credit Union-Laborers Local 574 Ford Ranger after starting 19th, earned the Ed & Company Hard Charger award as a result. Stan Maitlen, in the Meredith Heating & Cooling-Trent's Auto Parts Chevy, finished ninth in front of Doug Boehringer, who finished tenth in his career-first start.
Brett Rowe also won the Pork Pole award earlier in the day. Guinn was credited with the Cloyes Gear Halfway Lap Leader honors.
The next events for the ARCA Lincoln Welders Truck Series will be Friday night, August 13 at Kil-Kare Speedway in Xenia, Ohio followed by a trip to the DuQuoin State Fairgrounds mile-dirt on August 28.
