NOTES OF INTEREST: Fresh from the 2.5-mile Pocono triangular superspeedway last Saturday, the ARCA RE/MAX Series, the most versatile stock car series in the world, is off to the .4-mile Lake Erie Speedway short-track this weekend with the ARCA RE/MAX 200 presented by Hamot & Siemens, Giant Eagle and Pork. From Lake Erie, the series steers for the 1.33-mile Nashville Superspeedway concrete track the following weekend before it heads off to the Illinois State Fairgrounds in Springfield IL for a 100-lap main event on the mile-dirt. The Lake Erie event marks the second appearance of the RE/MAX Series at Lake Erie Speedway. Drivers from 14 states are entered including 5-time series champion and current point leader Frank Kimmel, who is also the defending race winner. Kimmel passed Billy Venturini on the final corner of the final lap to win the inaugural event last year. The Saturday night RE/MAX Series race will cap off a double-dose of ARCA racing over the weekend at Lake Erie featuring the ARCA Lincoln Welders Truck Series 100 lap main event presented by USG on Friday night, Aug 6 followed by the 200-lap RE/MAX Series main event on Saturday night, Aug 7. Columbus OH driver Robbin Slaughter is the only driver entered for both events. Slaughter, who has only 1 previous RE/MAX Series start, was the Lincoln Welders Truck Series champion in 2000 & 2001. The ARCA RE/MAX 200 at Lake Erie presents an interesting mix of talent from rookies to veterans. From the veteran side, Kimmel leads the way with 53 career series wins, just 1 away from tying Jack Bowsher for second on the all-time win list. Also entered is 2-time Daytona ARCA 200 winner Bobby Gerhart out of Lebanon PA and third-generation drivers Jason Jarrett and Billy Venturini. Jarrett's father Dale Jarrett was the NASCAR Nextel Cup Series champion in 1999 whereas Venturini's father Bill was the ARCA RE/MAX Series national champion in 1987 and 1991. Todd Bowsher, also entered, is another next-generation ARCA driver. Todd's father Jack was the ARCA national champion in 1963, 64 & 65. Both fathers, Venturini's & Bowsher's, presently serve as crew chiefs for their sons in the RE/MAX Series. Series veteran and 4-time winner Mark Gibson will make his 273rd career series start at Lake Erie. From the rookie ranks, Kyle Krisiloff, son of Indy 500 veteran Steve Krisiloff, will make his series debut at Lake Erie in the ditech.com Chevrolet. Krisiloff is on a Hendrick Motorsports driver development program via Bobby Gerhart Racing and the RE/MAX Series. 16-year-old Josh Allison, who makes his 5th series start at Lake Erie, is the youngest rookie in the field. The battle for Rookie of the Year continues to be very close with Sparks NV rookie TJ Bell (4th in overall points) leading by just 12 points over Galesburg IL rookie AJ Fike. Ryan Hemphill, who has no regular short-track program, trails in third followed by Brandon Knupp and Tim Turner. The Manufacturer championship is still close with Dodge leading by just 6 points over Ford with Chevrolet trailing in third.
